KATY, Texas \u2013 After KPRC 2\u2019s reporting into financial transparency at Katy American Little League<\/a>, many of you have come forward with similar concerns involving other youth sports organizations.<\/p>\n

Several viewers contacted KPRC 2 describing what they say are questionable financial practices in their own leagues \u2014 raising broader concerns about oversight and accountability in youth sports.<\/p>\n

Among the cases brought to KPRC 2\u2019s attention:<\/p>\n

At Oak Dads Club, the league president was removed last year following concerns over missing funds. <\/p>\n

In Lake Jackson, a girls softball association treasurer was charged with theft, accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the league. <\/p>\n

Ruben Reyna, a former umpire with Katy American Little League<\/a>, said transparency is critical.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that every little league has to be accountable,\u201d Reyna said. \u201cYou know the board, they have a responsibility and they need to account for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyna said he requested an audit through Little League\u2019s district and regional leadership after noticing financial discrepancies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a meeting at the end of 2024 and nothing came out of it,\u201d Reyna said.<\/p>\n

A widespread issue with limited oversight<\/p>\n

There is currently no statewide system in Texas specifically regulating youth sports organizations.<\/p>\n

Last legislative session, State Representatives Jo Jones and Ana-Mar\u00eda Ramos introduced House Bill 816<\/a>, which aimed to create a licensing and regulatory system for youth sports programs. <\/p>\n

The bill would have also established a public reporting system for violations and safety concerns.<\/p>\n

The bill ultimately died in committee.<\/p>\n

Warning signs families should watch for<\/p>\n

Parents and advocates say there are clear red flags families should not ignore.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they present a single sheet of paper as their financial records, you start to raise an eyebrow. You start to question,\u201d said Drew Isle.<\/p>\n

Experts and league officials recommend families ask questions and stay involved, especially when financial transparency is lacking.<\/p>\n

You should also look into whether your league accepts electronic payments, as cash and checks can be diverted into personal checking accounts.<\/p>\n

What families can do if they suspect fraud<\/p>\n

Little League International outlines steps leagues should take if fraud or embezzlement is suspected:<\/p>\n

Enroll in a crime insurance policy <\/p>\n

Determine when the financial loss occurred <\/p>\n

File a police report <\/p>\n

Submit an insurance claim <\/p>\n

Report the issue to Little League International <\/p>\n

Families can also file complaints with the Texas Attorney General\u2019s Office through its Charitable Trusts Division<\/a>, which oversees nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n

For many families, the issue goes beyond finances.<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle league is about the kids,\u201d Reyna said. \u201cThe kids own the league, you\u2019re not the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parents say accountability is key to protecting not only their money, but also the integrity of programs their children depend on.<\/p>\n

KPRC 2 has reached out to Little League International about its financial disclosure policies and oversight procedures.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said the organization is working on a statement and expects to respond soon.<\/p>\n
