{"id":222874,"date":"2026-03-27T09:53:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T09:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/222874\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T09:53:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T09:53:10","slug":"corpus-christi-crabs-in-rugby-playoffs-for-first-time-in-12-years-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/222874\/","title":{"rendered":"Corpus Christi Crabs in rugby playoffs for first time in 12 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Crabs have welcomed in both rugby veterans and newcomers this season.<\/p>\n<p>CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 The Corpus Christi Crabs&#8217; rugby team is doing its best to fill the Spring football void by making their first playoff appearance in 12 years this weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Crabs were out practicing at Bill Witt Park Thursday night after coming off a perfect regular season and a division title. The team is made up of guys who are all local and range in age from 21 up to about 45. They say they&#8217;ve done it with members that have both been playing rugby for years and some that have been playing for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have guys who joined two weeks ago and they&#8217;re on the team already, so we&#8217;re always looking for new guys,&#8221; said fly-half Bobby Hyatt.<\/p>\n<p>Hyatt is the team&#8217;s primary playmaker and is essentially like a quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re also a community and we&#8217;re always looking to develop each other and grow together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach Robert Hayes echoed the sentiment that all are welcome to try out for the team in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a game that everybody can play,&#8221; Hayes said. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter your size: big or small, fast or slow, you can come out and play rugby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Crabs will host Oklahoma City this Saturday at 2 PM at Haas Middle School.<br \/>If they win that&lt; they would go on to play in the Red River Championship on April 12th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Crabs have welcomed in both rugby veterans and newcomers this season.
