EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 As International Women\u2019s Month nears its end, a senior center in West El Paso held a celebration on Friday to honor the women who call it home.<\/p>\n
The Polly Harris Senior Center and the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department hosted a special event giving women at the center \u201ctheir time to shine.\u201d<\/p>\n
The annual celebration included music, dancing, raffles, and other activities, as each participant received a rose as a symbol of appreciation. <\/p>\n
During the event, attendees could be heard cheering, \u201cQue viva las mujeres!\u201d<\/p>\n
Center supervisors said the program is meant to uplift women and give them a sense of community.<\/p>\n

“We’re celebrating their life, their resilience, their perseverance here on earth, and so we’re wanting for them to have a great day,” Maria Lopez, program supervisor at Polly Harris Senior Center, said.<\/p>\n
She added that she celebrates that day in honor of her mother, “My mother grew up in times when women really didn’t have too many rights, but she taught me to be independent and be both a mother and a professional.”\\<\/p>\n
The celebration honors International Women\u2019s Month, which celebrates the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in communities across the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to celebrate the incredible women in our community who continue to inspire us with their strength, resilience, and lasting contributions,\u201d Parks and Recreation Director Pablo Caballero said. \u201cThis event is a meaningful way to recognize and honor their impact while bringing our community together in celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n
