She will be succeeded by Peter Debruge, the longtime chief film critic at Variety, who assumes the role of director beginning April 6. Variety is owned by Penske Media Corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/business\/2021\/04\/19\/sxsw-sells-penske-media-corp-south-by-southwest-sale\/7282694002\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which acquired a 50% stake in\u00a0SXSW in 2021<\/a>\u00a0when the festival was financially vulnerable after pandemic-era cancellations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SXSW\u2019s news release did not provide a reason for Godfrey\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n<p>The leadership shift comes as SXSW adjusts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/article\/sxsw-austin-festival-changes-survive-21938820.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">structural and financial changes<\/a> following its post-pandemic reset and a condensed 2026 format. Once a 10-day event anchored by the Austin Convention Center, the festival has shifted to a shorter, decentralized model amid ongoing questions about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/business\/article\/sxsw-2026-austin-business-impact-22079235.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attendance, sponsorship and long-term direction.<\/a> Early bird passes to SXSW 2027 in Austin are on sale now, but organizers have not released dates for next year&#8217;s event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Godfrey\u2019s departure follows a long tenure that began as a volunteer role and culminated in leading the Film &amp; TV division after she succeeded Janet Pierson in 2022. Under Godfrey&#8217;s direction, the festival served as a platform for directors including Janicza Bravo, Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, as well as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the duo behind the Oscar-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/sxsw\/2022\/03\/12\/sxsw-2022-film-review-everything-everywhere-all-once-austin-michelle-yeoh-jamie-lee-curtis-daniels\/9432110002\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once,\u201d<\/a> one of the festival\u2019s most prominent recent premieres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaudette has been an integral part of SXSW for many years, and her leadership has helped shape what the Film &amp; TV Festival is today,\u201d said Greg Rosenbaum, senior vice president of programming. \u201cShe has built a program that is both globally relevant and deeply rooted in discovery, and we\u2019re incredibly grateful for her contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Debruge arrives with a background in criticism and festival coverage rather than programming. During a 20-year career at Variety, he became the third chief film critic in the publication\u2019s history, writing over 2,000 reviews and reporting from major international festivals.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment also marks a homecoming for Debruge. A native of Waco, he\u00a0studied film at the University of Texas at Austin and worked at The Daily Texan alongside former SXSW Film head Matt Dentler. Debruge later contributed to The Austin Chronicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His appointment also reflects the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/entertainment\/article\/make-or-break-year-sxsw-prove-itself-saw-22085362.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing influence of\u00a0Penske Media Corporation<\/a>, based in Los Angeles and New York City, on the Austin-born event. In addition to Variety, the company\u2019s portfolio includes major entertainment and culture publications such as The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/entertainment\/music\/article\/sxsw-2026-don-toliver-billboard-tickets-austin-21234994.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billboard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/entertainment\/music\/article\/sxsw-lola-young-rolling-stone-22074939.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone<\/a>. The latter two publications\u00a0produce ticketed events\u00a0that are some of the festival&#8217;s most popular music showcases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before this year&#8217;s event, Godfrey told the American-Statesman that Penske&#8217;s investment saved SXSW\u00a0and that festival organizers work with the Penske publications the same way they work with other presenting partners.
