{"id":22408,"date":"2025-10-27T02:02:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T02:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/22408\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T02:02:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T02:02:07","slug":"san-antonio-food-bank-prepared-to-empty-its-warehouse-after-usda-opts-against-continuing-snap-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/22408\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio Food Bank prepared to \u2018empty its warehouse\u2019 after USDA opts against continuing SNAP benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 The president of the San Antonio Food Bank said he is prepared to take extraordinary measures to ensure food needs are met amid the ongoing federal shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The food bank is expecting a 50% increase in demand after the U.S. Department of Agriculture said federal food aid will not be issued on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The notice came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/26\/trump-administration-posts-notice-that-no-federal-food-aid-will-go-out-nov-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/26\/trump-administration-posts-notice-that-no-federal-food-aid-will-go-out-nov-1\/\">the Trump administration said it would not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds<\/a> to keep benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, flowing into November, the Associated Press reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cNobody should go to bed hungry,\u201d food bank president Erik Cooper said in a news release. \u201cWe want our community to know we will have food and have their backs while the shutdown continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The additional potential demand is equivalent to needing an extra 12-13 tractor-trailers of food each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The food bank was already anticipating 50,000 federal workers and contractors would seek help from pantries it helps support if the shutdown extends into November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/21\/san-antonio-food-bank-braces-for-surge-in-demand-as-federal-government-shutdown-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/21\/san-antonio-food-bank-braces-for-surge-in-demand-as-federal-government-shutdown-continues\/\">KSAT reported last week<\/a>.
