John Cornyn, Paxton\u2019s opponent, skipped the conference this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">GRAPEVINE, Texas &#8211; Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has gotten the nod from the Conservative Political Action Conference in his bid to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During the convention\u2019s final day in Grapevine, Texas, on Saturday, CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp shook Paxton\u2019s hand center-stage as he announced the group\u2019s official endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What they&#8217;re saying<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paxton thanked the gathering and encouraged them to vote in the May 26 runoff. He also used the opportunity to go after his opponent who opted not to attend the convention this year.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/d685ac633345da12957fd5bb99a306bb.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I think it\u2019s indicative of the problem with John Cornyn that he wouldn\u2019t come to what I think is the largest grassroots event in the last year in Texas, and he wouldn\u2019t even show up,&#8221; Paxton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He also called out the Senate\u2019s failure to pass the SAVE America Act, which would, among other things, require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. Cornyn has recently endorsed the measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dig deeper<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paxton also brought up the partial government shutdown over funding for the Department of Homeland Security. While the Senate passed a measure to fund DHS early Friday morning, the House rejected it after senators left on a two-week recess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Let\u2019s get rid of the guy that represents Washington, and let\u2019s put somebody in that represents Texas,&#8221; Paxton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What&#8217;s next<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Early voting for the runoff between Cornyn and Paxton runs from May 18-22.
