Judge denies bond reduction for man charged in Robstown teen\u2019s fatal shooting<\/a><\/p>\nDuring the hearing, prosecutors said recorded jail calls revealed Guzman reacted to learning a woman he was involved with had been with another man.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They told the court he then directed others to find that man and assault him, and urged the woman to help lure the individual.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors presented the calls as evidence, arguing Guzman continued making threats and discussing potential acts of violence while behind bars.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs\u00a0you have heard, even from jail, the defendant continues to plan additional crimes against additional persons,\u201d a prosecutor told the court. \u201cHe\u2019s most certainly going to either carry those out or plan additional [crimes] as soon as he gets out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said the conversations included directing others to find and assault another individual.<\/p>\n
Guzman’s defense attorney argued the recordings reflect emotional distress rather than credible threats.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe phone\u00a0calls you\u2019ve heard are a heartbroken boyfriend\u2026 confronting his significant other,\u201d the defense said.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s a normal reaction\u2026 it doesn\u2019t make him a danger.\u201d<\/p>\n
After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge determined the state met the legal standard to deny bond.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do\u00a0believe that the state has met its burden\u2026 and so I am going to deny bond in this case,\u201d Stith said.<\/p>\n
The charge stems from the fatal shooting of a Robstown teenager. While details of the shooting\u00a0were not the focus of Monday’s hearing, Guzman will remain in custody as the case moves forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
