{"id":227505,"date":"2026-03-30T20:59:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T20:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/227505\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T20:59:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T20:59:23","slug":"texas-tech-names-new-horn-distinguished-professors-march-2026-texas-tech-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/227505\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas Tech Names New Horn Distinguished Professors | March 2026 | Texas Tech Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                     Andrew Jackson and Christopher Witmore join the time-honored list of Texas Tech\u2019s<br \/>\n                        finest researchers and scholars.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tCREATORS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lucy-greenberg.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Lucy Greenberg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/ceweb\/faculty\/w._andrew_jackson\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andrew Jackson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/classic_modern\/classics\/people\/Witmore.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Christopher Witmore<\/a> were named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/provost\/horn-professors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professors<\/a> in February at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Texas Tech University<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastech.edu\/board-of-regents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Board of Regents<\/a> meeting held in Dallas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be designated a Horn Distinguished Professor is the highest academic honor a Texas<br \/>\n                           Tech faculty member can receive. The recognition, named after the university\u2019s first<br \/>\n                           president, is bestowed upon a faculty member who has attained national or international<br \/>\n                           recognition in their area of research or creative, scholarly achievement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with deep appreciation that I recognize this year\u2019s Distinguished Horn Professors<br \/>\n                           for their extraordinary contributions to Texas Tech,\u201d said Provost and Senior Vice<br \/>\n                           President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/provost\/bios\/rhendrick.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ron Hendrick<\/a>. \u201cTheir commitment to academic excellence, mentorship and the pursuit of knowledge<br \/>\n                           inspires our community, and their leadership in advancing research and engagement<br \/>\n                           reflects the very best of our institution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/andrew-jackson.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Jackson standing among the archways on TTU campus. \"\/>Andrew Jackson<\/p>\n<p>Department Chair Andrew Jackson joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/ceweb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Department of Civil, Environmental &amp; Construction Engineering<\/a> within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/coe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering<\/a> in 1998 and has built his career at Texas Tech ever since.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson earned a Bachelor of Science from Rhodes College, with a Master of Science<br \/>\n                           and doctoral degree from Louisiana State University. Jackson has more than 6,900 research<br \/>\n                           citations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing named a Horn Distinguished Professor has been a professional dream of mine,\u201d<br \/>\n                           Jackson says. \u201cPerhaps not a goal, because I wasn\u2019t sure if I could achieve something<br \/>\n                           like this. When you\u2019re at Texas Tech for decades like I\u2019ve been, you see some incredibly<br \/>\n                           impressive scholars given this designation. So, to now see my name on this list \u2013<br \/>\n                           it\u2019s a dream realized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson has developed a distinguished research record rooted in solving complex environmental<br \/>\n                           and engineering challenges. Among the projects most meaningful to him are his federal<br \/>\n                           research examining the chemical perchlorate and its effects in West Texas, as well<br \/>\n                           as his research for NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center on water and wastewater treatment<br \/>\n                           systems designed for space exploration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The culture of the department Jackson now leads is what shaped him as a researcher<br \/>\n                           in many ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe faculty who work here have such a willingness to collaborate,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen<br \/>\n                           I first arrived at Texas Tech, senior faculty really bent over backwards to find ways<br \/>\n                           to involve me in what they were doing and open doors of opportunity for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson endeavors to pay this forward in his own research and teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love waiting for data to come back and discover what the answer to a problem may<br \/>\n                           be,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve found that I love teaching graduate students to do the<br \/>\n                           same, and seeing their research careers unfold.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson plans to use the endowment that comes with the designation to further research<br \/>\n                           that serves West Texas and advance his research for NASA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WitmoreNHC2015-RonJautz.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Witmore standing in a classroom \"\/>Christopher Witmore<\/p>\n<p>President\u2019s Excellence in Research Professor of Archaeology and Classics Christopher<br \/>\n                           Witmore joined the faculty at Texas Tech in 2009 following the conclusion of a postdoctoral<br \/>\n                           fellowship at Brown University. He teaches in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/classic_modern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Department of Classical &amp; Modern Languages &amp; Literatures<\/a> within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/artsandsciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">College of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Witmore earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,<br \/>\n                           his Master of Arts from the University of Sheffield and his doctoral degree from Stanford<br \/>\n                           University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Witmore\u2019s research spans impressively broad intellectual terrain, including agrarianism,<br \/>\n                           archaeological theory and practice, chorography, thing theory and material culture<br \/>\n                           studies, the history of archaeology, science and technology, among other areas. His<br \/>\n                           work wrestles with fundamental questions about what it means to reckon with the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has written five books and has been published more than 80 times in research articles,<br \/>\n                           book chapters and other essays, including an op-ed in the New York Times. Witmore<br \/>\n                           has more than 6,500 research citations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArchaeology offers a rare purpose: to work with the myriad memories of other times<br \/>\n                           that have gathered in our present; to draw lessons from them in service of the lives<br \/>\n                           we must live; and to better understand what it means to be a part of the human adventure<br \/>\n                           across deep time,\u201d Witmore says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He notes that securing a position in his field of study is difficult, particularly<br \/>\n                           at a research-intensive university. He considers himself lucky to have become an assistant<br \/>\n                           professor in 2009 when there were only two such positions open in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat keeps me at Texas Tech though, is the strength of its community, the students,<br \/>\n                           colleagues and the institutional support,\u201d he says. \u201cThis designation is a tremendous<br \/>\n                           honor and a deeply humbling experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn<br \/>\n                           from this community, and I can only hope to return their confidence and trust by continuing<br \/>\n                           my research to the best of my abilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        About Horn Distinguished Professors<\/p>\n<p>In 1966, the Board of Regents established the Horn Distinguished Professorship to<br \/>\n                           recognize scholarly achievement and outstanding service to Texas Tech. Nominations<br \/>\n                           of prospective Horn Distinguished Professors are made in confidence by the college<br \/>\n                           deans, department chairs and other Horn Professors.
