AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Austin city leaders are moving forward with a plan to limit new parking lots near future light rail lines.<\/p>\n
They’re calling on City Manager T.C. Broadnax to come up with a plan to set a cap on the amount of parking in areas planned for the new light rail system.<\/p>\n
Council Member Krista Laine said this will help lower costs for residents by providing more room for housing instead of parking lots.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about making sure that we get the full value out of our transit system,\u201d said resident Miriam Schoenfield, who spoke in support of parking limits at city council. \u201cLight rail is an extremely important and also expensive investment, and its success depends so much on what is built around it.\u201d<\/p>\n
But others say it is unrealistic for Austinites to walk more places due to the hot weather and current reliance on driving cars.<\/p>\n
“The single-minded focus on reducing car use through restrictions rather than making transit truly attractive only lowers quality of life,” said resident Jennifer Bobichaux, who spoke in opposition to parking limits. “People cannot be forced out of their homes by making driving less convenient.”<\/p>\n
The plan passed with majority support along with another measure authored by Council Member Zo Qadri that allows the separation of residential rent from parking fees. This mainly applies for renters who don’t have cars and don’t want to be forced to pay for a parking space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The plan passed with majority support.
