Be More Pacific added a more chef-forward flavor to the scene, along with a fun patio and plenty of drinks.

So that brings me back to Sunday, when I walked into Be More Pacific with a mission of writing a story about the S.C.C.L.B.F.R., giving it and the restaurant more attention. But just a few tables were occupied. Another guy sat a few stools down the bar from me. Servers and bartenders seemed preoccupied in another parts of the restaurant. I waited for 15 minutes to order; in fact, I almost left the place altogether. And that’s something I never do.

But then the bartender came over, apologized and took my order. And as I received my steaming hot dish of S.C.C.L.B.F.R, the bartender decided to tell me this: “I think this may actually be our last night open.”

I can’t imagine the bartender knew who they were talking to. Also, I now felt bad for thinking about leaving. Nevertheless, I pocketed the information and waited. And on Monday morning, Be More Pacific’s Facebook page updated:

“After 14 unforgettable years, it’s time for us to say salamat and goodbye,” read the post. Be More Pacific has closed permanently.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the right one for our team and our future.”

In 2011, first-generation Filipinos and Houstonians Giovan Cuchapin and Mark Pascual started Be More Pacific as a food truck in Austin. Six years later came the Austin brick-and-mortar, and three years after that, they closed that location and moved back to Houston. They specialized in bringing Filipino standout dishes to the masses, like the stew kare kare and spam-centered silog. Lots of rice, lots of eggs, lots of savory goodness.

Be More Pacific also sold its own banana ketchup, served plenty of cocktails and had an inviting space with a regularly open garage door near 5th and Yale streets.

Sunday night was the end of Be More Pacific. I’m not sure, but it’s highly possible I was the final guest to eat inside the restaurant. The S.C.C.L.B.F.R. was delicious, as always.

At the time Houston was undergoing something of a Filipino and Pacific Islander food renaissance of sorts.
