Freshman Jocelyn Monroe tossed a complete-game five-inning shutout, striking out 12, as the Grapevine Faith Lions rolled to a 10-0 run-rule triumph over the Fort Worth Southwest Christian Eagles in a TAPPS Division II District 1 contest Tuesday at Oak Grove Park.<\/p>\n
Monroe, who bats third in the order, reached base on a two-out Southwest Christian error in the bottom of the first, and Reese Sabo \u2014 flex running for Monroe \u2014 after stealing second base, came around on an RBI double by Dallas Christian College signee Jessica McCann, to give Grapevine Faith an early 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n
That turned out to be all that Monroe needed, improving her record to 12-3 and recording her fourth shutout of the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cReally great win for us against a very good team,\u201d said Monroe, who had registered 108 strikeouts in 66 innings entering the matchup. \u201cTotal team effort. That has been us all season long.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grapevine Faith head coach Kenny Bruce said that Monroe \u201cturned in another great pitching performance\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cJocelyn seems to excel even more against the better teams,\u201d added Bruce. \u201cJust an outstanding job by her and the entire team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alixandria Ciccone led off the home half of the third with a double. The next hitter, junior Michaela Hamilton \u2014 a Northwestern State (LA) pledge \u2014 followed with an RBI triple that keyed a three-run inning that pushed the Grapevine Faith lead to 4-0.<\/p>\n
An RBI ground out by Ciccone added another run in the bottom of the fourth.<\/p>\n
The Lions then walked it off by run rule, with a five-run bottom of the fifth. A Monroe single to lead off the inning began the frame. Grapevine Faith then used four walks, a sacrifice bunt, and an infield single to produce three runs. Ciccone then ended the game on a bases-loaded one-out two-run double that activated the run rule.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did a great job in this game offensively,\u201d said Bruce. \u201cJocelyn\u2019s pitching performance, and then we closed it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ciccone had a pair of doubles, three RBIs and scored a run for the Lions.<\/p>\n
Reese Sabo, the flex runner for Monroe, scored three runs and tallied three of the Lions six stolen bases in the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe like to be aggressive on the base paths,\u201d said coach Bruce. \u201cJust taking advantage of situations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Monroe\u2019s lone trouble spot was the top of the fifth when SCS loaded the bases with two walks and a bunt single (one of just two hits allowed by Monroe in the game). However, Monroe preserved the shutout with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.<\/p>\n
Fort Worth Southwest Christian senior Lara Langford, a UMass-Boston signee, hurled four innings striking out four and giving up five runs in taking the loss. Langford (7-4 on the season) had notched her 250th career strikeout last week, and now stands just 22 shy of the 300 mark.<\/p>\n
Grapevine Faith Christian (15-3-1) will square off at Fort Worth Southwest Christian (10-6) Thursday late afternoon (4:30 pm start time) to complete the two-game series.
