Search our table."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Houston has more private schools in the program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/article\/school-voucher-most-applicants-22011572.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">than any other region in the state<\/a>. The overall number is nearly 700 schools, but that total includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/texas\/article\/data-suggests-vouchers-provide-big-boost-texas-21941066.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">hundreds of pre-K-only schools<\/a>. When considering only elementary, middle and high schools, the number is closer to 230 and is being updated weekly as the Texas Comptroller&#8217;s office approves new schools for the program. Schools can opt in until July, when the funds will be disbursed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>March 31 marks the deadline for Texas families to apply for a state-funded account to use for private school tuition and other educational costs. The funds range from $2,000 for homeschool families and up to $30,000 for students with disabilities, though most families will receive about $10,500 for private school tuition.<\/p>\n<p>In early March, a federal judge extended the original March 17 deadline by two weeks after some Islamic schools sued over being blocked from the program. Now, a handful of Islamic schools in the Houston area, including Bayaan Academy, Iman Academy and Houston Quran Academy, have been admitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, the comptroller is seeking to remove the Houston Quran Academy from the program again. Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock asked the Attorney General to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/texas\/article\/comptroller-ken-paxton-houston-quran-academy-22096036.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">remove the school&#8217;s business license<\/a>, alleging ties to groups deemed &#8220;foreign terrorist organizations&#8221; by Gov. Greg Abbott.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most of the religious private schools in Greater Houston are Christian schools, including Catholic, Episcopal, Baptist and nondenominational Christian campuses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/article\/best-private-schools-texas-new-niche-rankings-21078302.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">top-rated private<\/a>\u00a0schools in Houston, according to Niche rankings, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/article\/elite-private-schools-vouchers-21294985.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">opted not to participate in the program<\/a>. A few of the top-rated schools that are participating include The Village School, British International School, Lyc\u00e9e International de Houston, Calvary Episcopal Preparatory, St. Thomas Episcopal, Fort Bend Christian Academy and The Woodlands Christian Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Many schools for students with disabilities or learning differences have also joined in recent months, including The Briarwood School, The Parish School, Monarch School, The Westview School, The Harris School, Texas Autism Academy, The Journey School and The Joy School.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Houston has more private schools in the program than any other region in the state.
