{"id":230279,"date":"2026-04-01T14:05:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T14:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/230279\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T14:05:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T14:05:34","slug":"wnba-houston-comets-counting-down-to-2027-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/230279\/","title":{"rendered":"WNBA, Houston Comets counting down to 2027 return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">News broke on Friday at Tilman Fertitta and Fertitta Entertainment had a deal in place to buy the WNBA\u2019s Connecticut Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The historic $300 million agreement secured the Sun and they will be heading to Houston beginning with the 2027 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Comets have a storied history with the WNBA capturing the league\u2019s first four Championships under the guidance of Hall of Fame Coach Van Chancellor along with the leadership of stars Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s huge for the city and of course thanks to the Fertitta\u2019s\u201d, Cooper told KPRC 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy Tuesday night at Toyota Center. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s great to have the legacy and heritage back here in Houston,\u201d added Cooper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Swoopes also weighed in the return of the rising sport to Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe history and legacy, Tilman\u2019s always been a huge fan and it\u2019s nice to finally see the team come back here,\u201d Swoopes told McIlvoy before the Rockets game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe city loved us when were here and they\u2019ll love us coming back.
