{"id":230999,"date":"2026-04-02T00:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/230999\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T00:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:02:08","slug":"near-dark-bar-to-close-in-san-antonios-southtown-neighborhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/230999\/","title":{"rendered":"Near Dark bar to close in San Antonio&#8217;s Southtown neighborhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest closure to hit San Antonio&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/business\/article\/southtown-evolution-san-antonio-21290598.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Southtown neighborhood<\/a> might be symptomatic of a larger transition for the arts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/entertainment\/arts-culture\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">culture<\/a> district, which has seen numerous shakeups in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Near Dark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWZl4ntETj3\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">confirmed in a social media post<\/a> that its last day of business will be Saturday, April 4. For four years, the\u00a0goth bar has been a part of the South Presa retail strip that has long housed Taco Haven among several bars, restaurants and even a tattoo shop.<\/p>\n<p>That same strip has seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/food\/article\/petit-coquin-san-antonio-20158274.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a few of the comings and goings<\/a> in recent years that appear to be a part of an ongoing shift happening throughout Southtown.\u00a0In 2026,\u00a0Southtown\u00a0felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/business\/article\/brick-blue-star-san-antonio-closed-21360223.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the loss of Brick at Blue Star<\/a> and the Filling Station Tap Room, two enduring businesses that had unceremonious exits connected to issues of rent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rent has gone up quite a bit for everyone here,&#8221; Jon Rowe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/food\/article\/filling-station-taproom-san-antonio-22072529.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">owner of Filling Station<\/a>, told MySA in a recent interview. &#8220;Even though we get a fair amount of business, it&#8217;s just not enough to sustain a new lease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other well-known food and drink spaces in and around Southtown have shuttered over the last few years, including\u00a0Casacabel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/food\/article\/the-good-kind-san-antonio-21093208.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">The Good Kind<\/a>, K\u00fcnstler Tap Haus, South Alamode, Brown Coffee Co., A Perfect Day, Hands Down, Up Scale and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/food\/article\/barrio-dogg-san-antonio-closes-20186644.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Barrio\u00a0Doggs<\/a>. Reasons behind these closures included rising operating costs, lack of parking, construction obstructions or simply a new chapter for some business owners.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The economy isn\u2019t what it was 20 years ago, hell, even before COVID. Other things factor into it, like the construction and the parking situation,&#8221; Natalia Alejandro of Cascabel told MySA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/food\/article\/cascabel-mexican-patio-san-antonio-20784031.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">when the restaurant closed in July 2025<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All of this is to say that Southtown continues to find itself in a state of fluctuation ahead of some major developments planned for the surrounding area, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/local\/article\/san-antonio-spurs-arena-21290210.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the whole Project Marvel<\/a> thing that&#8217;s supposed to happen by 2032. Companies associated with such projects have already begun purchasing property in Southtown, including the building that houses Battalion, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/article\/holts-battalion-restaurant-hemisfair-property-21951377.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a report by the San Antonio Express-News<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With its long-standing history as a hub for local artists and restaurateurs, Southtown remains one of San Antonio&#8217;s trendiest places to wine, dine and unwind.
