Chefs and human resources staff allegedly found out about the closure in a late afternoon meeting on Monday, while line cooks were allegedly told Tuesday morning.<\/p>\nMa\u00f1ana, the coffee shop located inside the hotel, is expected to stay open during the renovations. Hyatt has not said the same for the other restaurants and bars located inside, which include Maie Day, Caf\u00e9 No S\u00e9, Otoko, Lobby Bar and Watertrade.<\/p>\n
According to a WARN notice posted by the Texas Workforce Commission, the layoffs impact 126 employees.<\/p>\n
Daryl Gomersall, general manager of the South Congress Hotel, said the hotel-wide renovations will include “a redesign of all guestrooms, enhancements and updates to public spaces including the lobby and rooftop” and a “refresh” of all food and beverage outlets. In the announcement on Wednesday, The Standard said the property will be transformed into a “culturally immersive gathering place for locals and travelers alike,” featuring “social wellness experiences, a rooftop pool, and world-class restaurants and bars,” as well as guest rooms that “bring a global sensibility brought to life with local craftsmanship.”<\/p>\n
“I have always loved the South Congress Hotel and have long envisioned its potential to be The Standard, Austin,” said Amar Lalvani, president and creative director of Hyatt’s Lifestyle Group. “We\u2019ve assembled an incredible team of Austin-based friends and collaborators who will both honor the property\u2019s legacy and breathe new life into it. Austin deserves a hotel that reflects the cultural capital it has always been and the world-class city it has become.”<\/p>\n
Hyatt’s Austin-based Bunkhouse Hotels brand team will support the project. Bunkhouse runs the Austin Motel, Carpenter Hotel, Hotel Magdalena, Hotel Saint Cecilia, Hotel San Jose\u0301 and Jo’s Coffee, most of which are in the South Congress area.<\/p>\n
The Standard said the Austin location is “envisioned as more than a hotel” and will “function as a lively campus of ideas and experiences that evolves throughout the day and night.” According to the brand, “Guests can move seamlessly between caf\u00e9s, dining spaces, guest quarters, and outdoor gathering spaces animated by music, conversation, and a considered cocktail program, culminating in a rooftop pool perched above South Congress.”<\/p>\n
The Austin location will be The Standard brand’s first U.S. opening in more than a decade. Other U.S. locations include Miami Beach, Florida, and hotels in the High Line and East Village in New York. Other global locations include Bangkok; Ibiza; Hua Hin, Thailand; Maldives; London; Singapore; Melbourne, Australia; Brussels; and Pattaya Na Jomtien.
