(AP Photo\/Jessica Hill, File)<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Hill\/AP<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0WNBA is expanding, and its two newest teams could acquire talent from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Wings.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For the 2026 season, the league will add its 14th and 15th franchises, the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo. Both teams will begin to assemble their rosters through the\u00a0WNBA\u2019s expansion draft set for Friday. Portland and Toronto can select from a designated pool of available players determined by each of the current 13 teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The league required the Wings and the 12 other existing teams to submit on March 29 a roster list that includes every player the organizations had rights to on the final day of the 2025 regular season. Teams could protect up to five players who will not be available for selection in the expansion draft, but unprotected players will be up for grabs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/paige-bueckers\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paige\u00a0Bueckers<\/a>, Aziaha James, JJ Quinerly, Diamond Miller and Maddy Siegrist are all under contract. The team has reserved the rights to centers Luisa Geisels\u00f6der and Li Yueru, as well as guard Grace Berger and guard-forward Haley Jones.<\/p>\n<p>The Wings also have the rights to forward\u00a0Awak Kuier, who has sat out of WNBA competition since after the 2023 season, and Lou Lopez S\u00e9n\u00e9chal, who elected to sit out 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Make Dallas News a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=dallasnews.com\" data-link=\"native\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Add Preferred Source\" class=\"td300 cp f aic jcc disabled:cd wsn px24 y40px px16 py8 buttonSm fs13 xs:fs16 xs:buttonLg bg-primaryAccessible hover:o80 c-white disabled:bg-gray300 disabled:c-gray600 border bn tac br2\"><\/p>\n<p>Add Preferred Source<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three Wings players \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/arike-ogunbowale\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arike Ogunbowale<\/a>, Myisha Hines-Allen and Tyasha Harris \u2014 are unrestricted free agents. Toronto and Portland can each select one player in the expansion draft who was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2026 season. More than 100 players are free agents in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/11\/23\/dallas-wings-win-no-1-overall-pick-in-the-wnba-draft-for-the-second-year-in-a-row\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has the No. 1 pick in the regular draft set for April 13.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bueckers probably a lock, but questions surround Ogunbowale<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not known who the Wings protected, but it&#8217;s very likely Dallas designated\u00a0Bueckers as unavailable for the expansion draft.<\/p>\n<p>Bueckers, the No. 1 pick an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/09\/16\/dallas-wings-paige-bueckers-named-wnba-rookie-of-the-year\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">d WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2025<\/a>, averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals during her debut season. The Wings have given every indication that they will build around her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year forward\u00a0Maddy Siegrist, still under contract with the team, could be another player the Wings protected. A 2023 first-round pick, Siegrist averaged 12.7 points and 4.3 rebounds for Dallas in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Ogunbowale\u2019s status might elicit more questions.<\/p>\n<p>The four-time WNBA All-Star, drafted in the first round by the Wings in 2019, enters her eighth season in 2026. She averaged a career-low in points (15.5) and field goal percentage (36.4%) in 2025 and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/08\/19\/dallas-wings-guard-arike-ogunbowale-to-be-sidelined-with-tendinitis-in-right-knee\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> didn\u2019t finish the season due to injury.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ogunbowale had been the face of the Wings franchise for several years, but as an unrestricted free agent, she is no longer under contract with the team. The Wings had the opportunity to protect her from being taken in the expansion draft, but even if the team did, it doesn\u2019t mean Ogunbowale will re-sign with Dallas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Protect the young core?<\/p>\n<p>Dallas\u2019 front office has often highlighted the team\u2019s young core, which includes\u00a0Bueckers, Siegrist, Miller and 2025 draft picks James and Quinerly.<\/p>\n<p>James and\u00a0Quinerly averaged 7.5 and 6.5 points, respectively, in 2025. But both players had breakout games last season, with James <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/07\/03\/dallas-wings-rookie-phenoms-paige-bueckers-and-aziaha-james-show-out-in-win-over-mercury\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scoring a career-high 28 points in a 98-89 win over the Phoenix Mercury last July. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>James scored in double figures in 12 of the 38 games she appeared in last season.\u00a0Quinerly did the same in eight of 34 games before her season ended last August with an ACL sprain. She underwent knee surgery in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/08\/03\/dijonai-carrington-trade-dallas-wings-minnesota-lynx\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who joined the team in August through a trade with the Minnesota Lynx,<\/a> is under contract with the Wings like\u00a0Quinerly and James. As are those of 6-4 center\u00a0Luisa Geisels\u00f6der and 6-7 center Li Yueru, who brought size to Dallas\u2019 2025 roster.<\/p>\n<p>Geisels\u00f6der missed stretches of last season due to overseas commitments and averaged 6.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
