A San Antonio Fire Department engineer was arrested Friday after police said they found a dead dog and a 12-year-old girl with autism alone at a North Side home.<\/p>\n
Jennifer Torres, 45, was arrested Saturday and charged with abandoning or neglecting a child. She posted a $30,000 bond and\u00a0was released the same day.<\/p>\n
Torres was confirmed as a firefighter by an SAFD spokesperson, who said that she has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, according to a KSAT-TV report. The Express-News has reached out to the fire department for more information.<\/p>\n
A preliminary police report provided to the Express-News states that on Friday, officers were called to check on the wellbeing of the girl before 5\u00a0p.m.\u00a0in the 4000 block of Spotted Oak Woods.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived, the city’s Code Compliance and the San Antonio Fire Department were already at the home because of a dead dog in the front yard, the report said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Police said firefighters entered the residence before\u00a0SAPD arrived because of a foul odor coming from inside.<\/p>\n
Once inside, firefighters found the girl alone in the home, according to the report. Police spoke with the girl outside the residence.<\/p>\n
A source told KSAT that the child\u2019s room had clusters of garbage, dog and cat waste scattered across the floor and on a mattress. The rest of the home was also in disarray.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then, Torres herself arrived at the location and was detained while officers continued their investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After obtaining permission from a judge to search the home, officers booked Torres on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child, according to the report.<\/p>\n
