Recently named a World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service, this Gulf Coast stronghold brings history to life across more than eighty scenic miles of shoreline and wide, sun-soaked beaches. That’s never more apparent than on the Fourth of July, when fireworks blaze over the bayfront, sails dot the horizon, and families stroll the sand at sunset, soaking up a destination shaped by service and the sea.

Photo: Courtesy of Visit Corpus Christi

Flags along the waterfront.

Beyond the sparkle of the holiday, the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi—an active training base since World War II and the place where a young aviator named George H.W. Bush earned his wings—showcases the enduring, year-round significance of the city. Just south of the base lies North Padre Island, a stretch of protected national seashore that once hosted bombing and strafing exercises during the 1940s; today it’s a mecca for birding, shell hunting, and tent camping on the sand. Visitors can also pay tribute to local heroes at Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park, where a restored, Vietnam-era Bell Huey helicopter seems to soar atop a fifteen-foot pedestal

Photo: Courtesy of Visit Corpus Christi

The USS Lexington Museum.

Military buffs shouldn’t miss visiting the USS Lexington, the country’s oldest and longest-serving aircraft carrier and now a naval aviation museum. Nicknamed the Blue Ghost, the Lexington saw action in pivotal Pacific battles during World War II and, decades later, became the first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier to assign women to its permanent crew. Today, visitors can explore exhibits like the ongoing Women in the Navy and see an aircraft featured in the film Top Gun—Maverick’s F-14 Tomcat—on display.

Photo: Courtesy of Visit Corpus Christi

The USS Lexington.

The patriotic spirit carries ashore, where veteran-owned businesses abound. At Portis Kountry Kitchen, for example, Air Force veteran Joseph Stith serves savory fried chicken alongside sweet peach cobbler and other Southern staples. For Japanese cuisine with a Texas twist, head to Roaming Ronin, owned by Navy veteran Alex Kim. Meanwhile, the flight school Splendid Aviation, founded by a former Marine, offers a range of accessible flying experiences, including discovery flights for veteran pilots and first-timers alike—offering a bird’s-eye view of the city’s sweeping coastline and barrier island beaches.

But the region’s identity extends beyond its proud military heritage. Among the institutions that call the waterfront home is the Art Museum of South Texas, a fifty-year-old landmark designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson; more than 100,000 visitors explore its diverse collection of American art each year. Cole Park serves as both a gathering place and a playground, complete with world-class deep-sea and wade fishing along with drivable beaches on Padre and Mustang Island. Nearby, the Texas State Aquarium offers an immersion into the fragile, mesmerizing world beyond the shoreline that shapes the rhythm of daily life here.

Photo: Courtesy of Visit Corpus Christi

A beer flight at Rebel Toad Brewing Co.

As summer approaches, the city is preparing to welcome travelers during a defining national moment.
