The man behind Bob Mills Furniture<\/a> is taking a page from the playbook of Houston\u2019s\u00a0\u201cMattress Mack.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Bob Mills<\/a>, the chain\u2019s founder and owner, is currently appearing in television commercials promising Spurs fans that any furniture or mattress purchased through April 12 at his stores in San Antonio and Schertz will be free if the team wins the NBA championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cSan Antonio is a basketball city,\u201d Mills said in a statement. \u201cPeople rally around the team, and we wanted to give customers a way to feel a part of that excitement in a real, tangible way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim \u201cMattress Mack\u201d McIngvale, owner of Houston\u2019s Gallery Furniture<\/a>\u00a0and a prominent sports bettor, has done similar marketing stunts tied to the Houston Astros and other teams if they win a championship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gallery Furniture currently is offering customers their money back on certain mattress purchases if Illinois wins the men\u2019s\u00a0NCAA Tournament. In 2022, the store offered customers double their money back if the\u00a0Astros won the World Series\u00a0\u2014 which they did\u00a0\u2014 the Houston Chronicle reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

McIngvale has routinely made multimillion-dollar sports bets as a way to hedge against the promotions. But he also has bought insurance to cover payouts to customers after big victories, according to the Chronicle.<\/p>\n

Like McIngvale, Bob Mills Furniture has taken steps to limit its financial exposure but didn\u2019t say how.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike many retailers who run high-profile promotions like this, we\u2019ve taken the appropriate steps to responsibly manage the risk associated with the offer,\u201d marketing manager Rebecca Sites said in an email.<\/p>\n

The promotion might seem a bit odd given Bob Mills Furniture is based in Oklahoma City, Okla., home to the NBA\u2019s Thunder, who are trying to hold off the Spurs for the top seed in the Western Conference. The Thunder are\u00a0the odds-on favorites to win the championship.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t appear that Bob Mills Furniture is offering a similar promotion for customers in Oklahoma if the Thunder win it all,\u00a0though Sites said the retailer regularly tailors promotions \u201cby market based on what\u2019s relevant locally.\u201d The store has 12 locations across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas and has been in business since 1971.<\/p>\n

The chain isn\u2019t concerned that the San Antonio promotion may not go over well with its neighbors who are Thunder fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs for Oklahoma City, there\u2019s always a little friendly rivalry in sports, but we\u2019ve found customers enjoy the excitement these promotions bring,\u201d Sites said. \u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s all about creating a fun and memorable experience for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the San Antonio promotion, Sites said there is no minimum purchase required to qualify, but there is a 20% cancellation fee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a news release, Bob Mills Furniture couched the promotion by stating customers who buy furniture through April 12 at the San Antonio or\u00a0Schertz stores \u201cwill have the chance to get their purchase completely free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sites explained it\u2019s worded that way for customers who opt out of the promotion by choosing not to make a 20% down payment or for some other reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wording is so that if someone opts out and then San Antonio wins, they don\u2019t expect to get their furniture purchase free after they opt out,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mills, in his statement, assured \u201cthere\u2019s no gimmick or complicated process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cost of the furniture will be returned if San Antonio wins, though customers will still be on the hook for taxes and services, such as delivery and furniture protection plans, Sites said.<\/p>\n

Neither the Spurs nor the NBA are actually mentioned in the promotion. League and team names are trademarked, so companies often use generic terms like \u201cthe Big Game\u201d or \u201cthe championship\u201d in promotions.
