HOUSTON \u2013 The Texas Attorney General\u2019s Office is launching an investigation into several solar companies operating in Texas, including SunRun, focusing on whether customers were misled about costs, savings, and contracts.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Ken Paxton says his office has received more than 100 formal complaints, along with thousands more online, tied to companies selling residential solar panel systems.<\/p>\n
At the center of the investigation are potential violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act. According to the Attorney General\u2019s Office, investigators are examining whether companies \u201cmisrepresentations regarding savings for consumers on their energy bills, the efficacy of their solar panel systems, equipment implementations, as well as the companies\u2019 terms and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those companies are Freedom Forever LLC, SunRun Inc., Lone Star Solar Services LLC, and CAM Solar Inc. <\/p>\n
\u201cThousands of Texans have been targeted\u2026 and it\u2019s imperative that these companies are held responsible for any lies or deceptive marketing,\u201d Paxton said in a statement.<\/p>\n

One of those cases involved Houston homeowner Frances Holt, who signed a contract with SunRun after a door-to-door sales pitch promised lower energy bills and protection from outages. Instead, she says she ended up facing confusion, installation issues, and a shocking demand for more than $134,000 tied to her agreement.<\/p>\n
Holt told KPRC 2\u2019s Rilwan Balogun she felt pressured into signing a contract she didn\u2019t fully understand and was never given a printed copy of the more than 40-page agreement.<\/p>\n
After KPRC 2\u2019s reporting, SunRun issued a statement apologizing and agreed to remove Holt\u2019s solar panels at no cost.<\/p>\n
Since that report aired, multiple viewers have reached out with similar stories.<\/p>\n
Consumer advocates say these complaints are not isolated.<\/p>\n
Organizations like AARP Texas have warned that confusion around solar contracts and aggressive sales tactics have surged in recent years. State data shows complaints tied to residential solar issues increased dramatically between 2018 and 2023.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General\u2019s investigation does not automatically mean wrongdoing has been proven, but it signals increased scrutiny of an industry that has rapidly expanded across Texas.<\/p>\n
If violations are found, the state could pursue legal action against the companies involved.<\/p>\n
In a statement to KPRC 2 News, a SunRun spokesperson said the company shouldn\u2019t be lumping in with other companies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe take issue with being lumped in with other companies that don\u2019t operate with the same strict standards that put Texas consumers first,\u201c the spokesperson said. \u201dOf the complaints mentioned, Sunrun accounts for just four over the last two years, which have all been resolved. In the rare event that a serious claim arises, we act swiftly to resolve the matter, ensuring our customers can continue to enjoy the many benefits of their Sunrun energy system.\u201d<\/p>\n
