The tournament remained a fall affair, bouncing around different venues while Crane’s Astros Foundation funded a $34-million renovation of Memorial Park Golf Course. By 2020, it was back at a revitalized, public Memorial Park Golf Course, and by 2024, the tournament was back in the spring, attracting players ramping up for the Masters. This year, the LPGA Tour’s Chevron Championship is following suit, moving the season-opening major on April 23-26 from The Woodlands to Memorial Park. That makes two professional golf tournaments to be hosted in Houston within a span of a month.

“I don’t know of any other city that has a PGA Champions Tour event (Insperity Invitational), a PGA Tour event and an LPGA event, especially an LPGA major,” Chevron Championship Executive Director Glenn Weckerlin told Chron. “The reason that’s special is every other major in the U.S., even the U.S. Open Championship, moves around. We’re the only one that stays in one place. So, we’ve created what I think is really, a really cool ‘Golf Mecca,’ with all those different golf tournaments going on, and they’re all clustered within the month of April.”

Professional golf is known for iconic destinations such as Augusta, Georgia; Pebble Beach, California; and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. But it seems like Houston is a rising name on the scene, with surrounding communities following with renovations to public courses like F.M. Maybe people are just now taking notice because the pros are flocking to the city to compete.

“I think even 30 years ago, when I was a junior golfer, the access for kids was there,” Lewis told Chron. “Houston Golf Association does an amazing job of having tournaments all over the city every single week in the summer at various locations … Then you have Jim Crane and the Astros stepping up and doing this to Memorial Park, and having the driving range for somebody to come after work. The game is growing in the city, and people are paying attention.”

The Astros Golf Foundation has transformed the Houston Open into one of premier sports events in the city, attracting some of the biggest names in golf: Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler and more, while also raising millions of dollars for Texas Children’s Hospital and other local non-profits.

But it’s not stopping there. Earlier this week, Crane told Paper City Magazine that he wants to take it to the next level by making it a “Signature Event” featuring a limited field with top-ranked players and increased prize money.

Article continues below this ad

“They’ve created an event that players show up because the golf course is in such good shape that they can prep for the Masters,” Chevron Championship Executive Director Glenn Weckerlin told Chron. “What’s amazing is they’ve done such a good job on that that they’ve already elevated the event without having it be a ‘Signature Event.’ Now, by creating a Signature Event, it just takes the field up another notch, right?”

The move to Memorial Park came after Chevron’s 2024 headquarters relocated from San Ramon, California to Houston. It just makes sense for the company’s sponsored tournament to be nearby for its employees to attend. The Astros’ Golf Foundation also lent a hand this year to aid in the tournament’s move, which the LPGA hopes will elevate the event to a level the Houston Open has achieved.

That includes a move to network TV this year, as the Chevron Championship, and therefore Memorial Park, will not just be on the Golf Channel, but also on NBC, with additional streaming on Peacock and ESPN+.

Article continues below this ad

“We’re getting all the benefits of the guys being here, too,” Lewis said. “We’re getting an amazing golf course in great shape. We’re getting to be in the city where there’s a lot going on… Just being a city golf course where anybody can come out play it, it just draws people in and make people want to watch.”

Thanks to the Astros’ Golf Foundation, Houston is becoming the next great golf city. Jordan Bank/Getty Images Memorial…

[7
16469,1704,56,58,57
0":"post-236109","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-houston","8":"tag-chronsports","9":"tag-chronstaff","10":"tag-houston","11":"tag-houston-headlines","12":"tag-houston-news
["GET
