Many plans are informed by Houston\u2019s hosting of the 2017 Super Bowl, college football championship games and even recent major events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarch has been a great example of how welcoming we are,\u201d said Michael Heckman, CEO of Houston First, the quasi-government agency that manages Houston\u2019s convention centers and tourism promotion.<\/p>\n<p>Before the month was even over, Heckman and others said it was the premier month for tourism in city history, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/rodeo\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo<\/a>, the World Baseball Classic and increased spring break tourism turned Houston into a destination. The annual CERA Week energy conference, NCAA men\u2019s basketball regional finals, Texas Children&#8217;s Houston Open and opening day for the Houston Astros kept restaurants and hotel rooms filled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had one after the other, after the other, after the other,\u201d Heckman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">RODEO FIGHT: <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/trending\/article\/houston-rodeo-fights-22079593.phpp\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Houston rodeo boosts police cooperation, monitors social media after weekend fights at carnival<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The revelry also came with moments that made some Houstonians cringe. Viral social media posts showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/trending\/article\/rodeo-houston-closed-early-22077771.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">women in revealing clothing and attendees causing a ruckus at the rodeo<\/a> that was quickly quelled by police. Nightclubs in Third Ward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/joy-sewing\/article\/third-ward-residents-demand-action-nightlife-22093620.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">spilled into the street<\/a>, even on weeknights, worrying some residents that Houston was getting a reputation as a party town.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, leaving Houston became a challenge on its own, after a federal funding fight led to Transportation Security Administration workers calling out sick in record numbers for lack of paychecks. Security lines some days stretched for four hours, testing the airport\u2019s operations and people\u2019s patience.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say they are working to keep the World Cup as free of trouble as possible, but can make no guarantees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravelers will be able to feel at home here,\u201d Heckman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But what if airport lines again stretch for four hours? A fight that seemed to move throughout a crowd of onlookers was captured widely on social media, showing Houston Police officers detaining some participants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite statements by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DV5X1uGDWep\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">witnesses of the disturbance<\/a>, no one was technically arrested or charged with a crime. Rodeo officials this week confirmed that a small number of people, all juveniles, were detained by police and removed from the premises for violating the rodeo\u2019s code of conduct. None were charged or taken into custody by police, other than to escort them away. Since 2023, the tourism agency has hosted 30 or more social media influencers from the U.S. and Mexico annually in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20250225256528\/en\/Houston-First-Hit-New-Convention-Sales-Record-in-24?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">effort to advertise<\/a>\u00a0the city and its many offerings..\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of those efforts has not meant a change in who Houston First is trying to lure to Houston, Heckman said. Campaigns are less focused on younger, single travelers and more on family options and diversity: the things Houston believes it can sell with sporting events, Space Center Houston and a plethora of cuisines and cultures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not seen a marked difference in our visitors,\u201d Heckman said. \u201cWe have seen more of them, but we have not seen a dramatic shift in who those visitors are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the focus, more single people looking for nightclubs are making their way to Houston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly the kind of moment cities spend millions trying to manufacture: people choosing your city,\u201d wrote Shea Jordan Smith, a Houston native who worked for various local elected officials, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/shea_jordan\/status\/2033186047614460024?s=20\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">social media post<\/a>. \u201cHouston should be treating it like the economic and branding opportunity it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Houston First and others advertise Houston for its family friendly bona fides, others are marketing the city as an affordable location for serious fun-seekers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouston has been budding for a few years now,\u201d said Blake Payne, co-owner of Hall of Fame Enterprises, an Atlanta-based promotions company. \u201cYou guys are killing it right now, which is a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For years, but especially since 2022 when Miami began considering rules to curtail spring break excesses, marketing and event companies have offered options in Houston, based on the strong nightlife and restaurant scene. Often, the efforts are coordinated online and word spreads via social media. When Florida and South Miami Beach cracked down on the parties, he said they failed to recognize the nightlife was keeping a lot of their businesses afloat and lost events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as we moved it somewhere else, they lifted the restrictions,\u201d Payne said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, with Miami and assorted cities increasing enforcement on some clubs for the weeks of spring break, Houston has emerged as a popular destination \u2013 and brings along with it some of the concerns about street takeovers, excessive noise and late-night partying.<\/p>\n<p>Houston Police, meanwhile, have aggressively \u2013 and with Mayor John Whitmire in tow \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/police-after-hours-club-raid-21515477.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">focused on illegal after-hours clubs<\/a> operating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/trending\/article\/after-hours-bars-houston-20320754.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">without the proper permits<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>None of that, so far, has dented the city\u2019s popularity among fun-seekers, Payne and others said.<\/p>\n<p>Payne welcomed Houston\u2019s reticence to adopt \u2013 so far \u2013 restrictions such as curfews or forced bar closures. Instead, he encouraged working with the promoters, who are also planning a slew of events in World Cup host cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we didn\u2019t get connected with the right people,\u201d Payne said, when asked why some events in Houston this year had problems with noise or unruly crowds. \u201cI would love to sit down with the city and work on a future-proofing type of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, he said, Houston has a lot of potential as an affordable alternative for visitors, but within its limitations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to beat the beach,\u201d Payne said, predicting a rebound for Miami. \u201cHouston, unfortunately, doesn&#8217;t have that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Construction continues on Main Street Promenade to make the street more pedestrian friendly on March 27, 2026, in Houston. The work is expected to be ready for the World Cup in early June.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Fochtman\/Houston Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>A different event<\/p>\n<p>What it has this year is a chance to be one of 16 host cities for the largest sporting event in the world \u2013 an event large enough that officials began planning in earnest nearly four years ago when Houston was chosen. Since then, there has been a bull&#8217;s-eye on June 2026, as well as locations where the games will be played and celebrated: downtown Houston, EaDo, NRG Park and places in-between.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Various public works projects aim to put a crisp clean face on these areas for visitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are currently wrapping up $30 million of infrastructure work, and more than $29 million of those projects will be permanent improvements Houstonians will benefit from for years to come,\u201d said Ann Taylor, engagement director for the Houston Downtown Management District.<\/p>\n<p>That includes repaving 120 blocks of downtown streets, with work scheduled for completion in May.
