John Cornyn was poised for a knockout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>He was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/16\/john-cornyns-trump-pivot-looms-over-high-stakes-senate-runoff-against-ken-paxton\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> angling for an endorsement<\/a> from President Donald Trump, a move that would have put the incumbent in better stead with MAGA voters before the May 26 Republican Senate runoff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>After the March 3 primary, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/04\/trump-calls-for-texas-gop-senate-primary-to-end-vows-endorsement-soon-of-cornyn-or-paxton\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said he would endorse <\/a>a Senate candidate and the other one should drop out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Paxton landed a punch out of nowhere. He said he\u2019d consider stepping aside if the Senate approved the SAVE America Act, a Trump-backed bill that imposes strict voter registration rules.<\/p>\n<p>With passage unlikely, that gave\u00a0Paxton cover to stay in. Trump leaned into the pressure, urging Republicans to bypass the filibuster, a rule that can block bills without broad support, and still hasn\u2019t endorsed.<\/p>\n<p>Make Dallas News a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=dallasnews.com\" data-link=\"native\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Add Preferred Source\" class=\"td300 cp f aic jcc disabled:cd wsn px24 y40px px16 py8 buttonSm fs13 xs:fs16 xs:buttonLg bg-primaryAccessible hover:o80 c-white disabled:bg-gray300 disabled:c-gray600 border bn tac br2\"><\/p>\n<p>Add Preferred Source<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The delay gave Paxton more time to make his case and seek Trump\u2019s support, including a trip to Mar-a-Lago for a Palm Beach County GOP dinner where he was seen speaking with the president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Vinny Minchillo, a Plano-based Republican consultant who has worked on Trump\u2019s presidential campaigns, said he was surprised Trump has stayed neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically when the president says he&#8217;s going to do something, he does something,\u201d Minchillo said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said if Trump doesn\u2019t endorse Cornyn, \u201cit\u2019s advantage Paxton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Trump on the sidelines, Paxton doesn\u2019t have to worry about a fractured base. And in a low-turnout runoff, the most fervent Republicans are likely to decide the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaxton\u2019s voters are more enthusiastic and will come out again to the polls, no matter what,\u201d Minchillo said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Cornyn can\u2019t be counted out.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party is broader than MAGA activists, and his first-place finish in the March 3 primary proves he has significant support, possibly more than Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn has continued to spotlight\u00a0Paxton\u2019s perceived political liabilities, including his 2023 GOP-led impeachment, which ended in acquittal. Paxton also is facing a highly publicized divorce amid allegations of an extramarital affair, which he has denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Paxton feels confident that the party\u2019s core conservatives are in his corner and they will show up for the runoff at a greater clip than Cornyn\u2019s backers.<\/p>\n<p>Voters who supported U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt in the primary also are up for grabs, a potential difference-maker. Hunt has not endorsed anyone in the runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick look at the other key runoffs, including a Dallas-area U.S. House race and the Texas attorney general contest.<\/p>\n<p>The 33rd Congressional District<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of Dallas and Rep. Julie Johnson of Farmers Branch are vying to represent the newly redrawn district.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Allred had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2026\/03\/03\/redrawn-congressional-district-forces-two-democrats-into-race-with-stakes-beyond-texas\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a nearly 11-point win <\/a>in the March 3 Democratic primary but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then he\u2019s picked up endorsements from the other candidates, activist Carlos Quintanilla and former tech executive Zeeshan Hafeez.<\/p>\n<p>Allred is working to turn out the same coalition, while Johnson is trying to expand her base and blunt her rival\u2019s momentum.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"This combination of photos shows Rep. It enforces child support laws, protects consumers, defends the state in lawsuits and provides legal guidance to state agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>On the Republican side, state Sen. Mayes Middleton of Houston<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/13\/mayes-middleton-and-chip-roy-go-on-offense-ahead-of-ag-runoff\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> finished comfortably ahead<\/a> of U.S. Rep. Chip Roy of Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Middleton, who brands himself \u201cMAGA Mayes,\u201d is courting Trump-aligned voters and the party\u2019s most conservative flank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The oil and gas executive has poured significant personal money into the race, using his wealth to build name recognition and cast himself as the clearest ideological match for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Middleton cited his legislative record pushing conservative priorities, including a law mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools. He has said Middleton lacks legal experience to serve as attorney general.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roy, who previously served as first assistant attorney general and as chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz, also has touted his legal background and ties to conservative leadership to argue he is better prepared to run the office.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic contest features state Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas against former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/19\/democrats-in-ag-runoff-go-negative-but-present-similar-messaging\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">came close to clearing the majority threshold <\/a>in March, setting him up as the party\u2019s frontrunner heading into the runoff.
