Being a minor celebrity doesn\u2019t guarantee anything in politics. Just ask Offer Vince Shlomi, a.k.a. the \u201cShamWow Guy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shlomi spent more than $300,000 of his own money on his Texas 31st Congressional District Republican primary campaign, according to new Federal Election Commission records<\/a> \u2014 only to witness his competition obliterate him last month at the ballot box.<\/p>\n In the end, Shlomi earned fewer than 3,200 votes. That works out to more than $94 per vote in a losing effort in which Shlomi finished sixth<\/a> in a field of 10 candidates.<\/p>\n Incumbent Rep. John Carter<\/a> easily won the primary in a decidedly red district that includes a large swath of Texas north of Austin and southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.<\/p>\n While his official congressional committee name is \u201cOffer Vince ShamWow Shlomi for Congress,\u201d per FEC records<\/a>, Shlomi\u2019s nickname didn\u2019t appear on the Republican primary ballot \u2014 and Shlomi is suing the Republican Party of Texas<\/a> over the omission.<\/p>\n \u201cRigged election by these rhinos,\u201d Shlomi wrote<\/a> on X last month.<\/p>\n He said the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last year and his desire to fight \u201cwokeism\u201d in part prompted<\/a> him to run. His platform included<\/a> ending pornography on X, requiring more live customer service on corporate help lines and allowing children to pray in schools.<\/p>\n Shlomi could not immediately be reached for comment about his personal spending on his campaign.<\/p>\n Michael Bloomberg retains the title for the most high-profile recent federal election candidate to blow through massive amounts of their own money<\/a> on an ultimately futile campaign, during his presidential run in 2020. But Shlomi\u2019s cash burn for such a mediocre showing stands out among this year\u2019s candidates.<\/p>\n Shlomi vaulted to national prominence nearly 20 years ago when he served as the fast-talking, slightly abrasive TV pitchman for the \u201cShamWow<\/a>\u201d chamois towel. He\u2019s also promoted such products as the Slap Chop kitchen gadget and Schticky lint roller. Shlomi has also found himself crosswise with the law, including an incident in 2009 that got him arrested after he fought with an alleged prostitute<\/a>.<\/p>\n He joins onetime \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d finalist Clay Aiken<\/a>, Dr. Mehmet Oz<\/a> and musician Kanye West<\/a> as celebrities who\u2019ve unsuccessfully sought federal office.<\/p>\n Others, however, have been more successful in finding their second acts in politics, including singer Sonny Bono<\/a>, actor Ronald Reagan<\/a>, comedian Al Franken<\/a>, MTV \u201cReal World\u201d star Sean Duffy<\/a> and, of course, \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d host and World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame member Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Being a minor celebrity doesn\u2019t guarantee anything in politics.
