But the receptionist greeting women helps make it feel more manageable \u2014 because she knows what they\u2019re going through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a lot of brokenness. Just a lot of discouragement,\u201d Angelia Wilson said. \u201cJust being at Nexus, it helped me build myself up, helped me start loving myself, not being so angry. I became more happier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s bright smile and welcoming presence offer little sign of her past struggles with substance use disorder. She completed her own recovery at Nexus and later returned to work as the admissions receptionist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer story is unique because it\u2019s hers,\u201d Nexus Family Recovery Center CEO Heather Ormand said. \u201cBut her story is not unique to what our clients go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nexus Family Recovery Center is one of the few programs in Texas that allows women in recovery to bring their children. Last year, the nonprofit served more than 3,300 women and more than 200 children.<\/p>\n<p>About one-third of Nexus\u2019 funding for recovery and family programs comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/nexusrecovery.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">donations and fundraisers<\/a>, including the upcoming Mothers\u2019 Brunch and Bazaar \u2014 a lunch and shopping event held ahead of Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of these women suffering also have children that are dependent on them,\u201d Ormand said. \u201cSo places like Nexus are so necessary to make sure that mom can heal and take care of those kiddos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>April is Alcohol Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 178,000 people in the United States die each year from excessive alcohol use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is life outside of addiction,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for Nexus, I wouldn\u2019t be here today, and I thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those seeking help with substance use disorder, Nexus offers <a href=\"https:\/\/nexusrecovery.org\/help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">resources and support<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Walking through the admissions doors at Nexus Family Recovery Center in Dallas isn\u2019t easy.
