Early morning showers forced a major community Easter event to be canceled and sent others packing up early at local parks. But while the rain may have disrupted plans, it didn\u2019t stop people from finding ways to celebrate.<\/p>\n
As the rain moved into the city, locals braved the storm to catch a glimpse of a special tradition.<\/p>\n
Longtime organizer Debra Scott-Brown said the Easter Sunrise Passion Play is a beloved event in Corpus Christi, now in its 84th year.<\/p>\n
“There’s nothing like it here in the body of Christ, and it’s the life of Christ. To the end with crucifixion and the resurrection, and today is Easter, and he has risen,” Scott-Brown said.<\/p>\n
Scott-Brown said canceling the play wasn\u2019t an easy decision.<\/p>\n
“In my mind, it wasn’t going to be canceled until just now. We came out here with the intention. Everybody raised their hands and agreed to be a part of it, whether they had to sit on the wet grass or be out here in the cold, where it’s chilly because it’s raining so hard. Everybody was on board and just ready to do it with their hearts, ready to share the love of Christ,” Scott-Brown said.<\/p>\n
Ric Niksich said the community\u2019s support gave him strength as the rain began pouring.<\/p>\n
“It means a lot, with how hard it’s raining, and with the wind and it being cold with the front. For everybody to come out, it means a lot. I mean, the love of Jesus is strong, and it’s a blessing to see all the people come out,” Niksich said.<\/p>\n
Across the city at Labonte Park, the last families were packing up early. Sylvia Ann Uballe-Rodriguez and her family have an annual Easter tradition that has spanned decades.<\/p>\n
“We come out and we do a three-day camping. It’s a family event that we’ve done for years and years and years. My mom started this since I was a little girl, and we’re just keeping the tradition because of her,” Uballe-Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n
Although they had to pack up early, Uballe-Rodriguez said the celebrations are not ending.<\/p>\n
“Everybody said they were gonna come to my house, so let’s see. I know my children will be at my house, but anyone else is more than welcome to come and just hang out and enjoy the rest of the day,” she said.<\/p>\n
Scott-Brown said the weather didn\u2019t take away from the special meaning of the day.<\/p>\n
“So it’s just been a beautiful day of love and sharing the love of Christ in the rain. People came out, sat there, and would have stayed if we hadn’t called it. I just want to thank the city of Corpus Christi and our body of Christ here,” Scott-Brown said.<\/p>\n
