\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKyle drivers could see temporary traffic changes on Dacy Lane before the city\u2019s new community center opens June 9, as officials consider a short-term fix for safety concerns tied to the site\u2019s driveway access.<\/p>\n

City staff will recommend temporary road improvements necessary to provide safe center access to the City Council at an April 7 meeting.<\/p>\n

The overview<\/p>\n

A new community center<\/a> is set to open in Kyle on June 9, according to agenda documents<\/a>. Construction on the $4.5 million center<\/a> began in September and will feature a strong focus on activity programming for seniors.<\/p>\n

City staff evaluated the current driveway for vehicle safety with intersection sight distance and stopping sight distance criteria.<\/p>\n

Staff determined through SSD criteria that drivers moving northbound on Dacy Lane can safely see vehicles exiting the driveway and make any necessary stops.<\/p>\n

It was determined through ISD criteria that drivers exiting the current driveway cannot see beyond 235 feet in the southbound direction, below the distance needed to make a safe left or right turn.<\/p>\n

The final design of a permanent road safety solution, a driveway connecting the center to Dacy Loop, is estimated to be complete in July.<\/p>\n

City staff evaluated several design alternatives for a temporary road safety solution, according to agenda documents<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n

All-way stop: for vehicles exiting the driveway and for northbound and southbound traffic on Dacy LaneTraffic signal: would control driveway access and traffic on Dacy LaneCenter turn lane: would reconfigure the road to add a shared center turn laneCity staff will recommend a right-turn-only exit from the center as the temporary safety improvement at the April 7 meeting.<\/p>\n

Diving deeper<\/p>\n

The solution would alter the road in various ways, including:<\/p>\n

Changing Dacy Lane to one northbound lane at the drivewayCreating a right-turn-only lane for vehicles entering the driveway from the northbound directionOnly permitting right-turn exits from the drivewayProviding a protected lane for vehicles exiting the drivewayThe temporary improvement would make Dacy Loop a detour for vehicles moving southbound on Dacy Lane. Staff would install delineators, signage and striping as well.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead<\/p>\n

If approved, the temporary road solution is expected to remain in place for approximately 18 months as design and construction on the permanent driveway are completed.<\/p>\n
