Texas leaders aren’t even waiting for the next legislative session to take action blocking illegal aliens from various state services and benefits. In just the past year, the state has implemented new rules restricting illegals from getting commercial driver’s licenses and occupational licenses, and banning in-state tuition at colleges and universities. The state also tightened requirements for vehicle registrations to add proof of citizenship.

These actions have spawned criticism among left-leaning media outlets. The Texas Tribune ran a story accusing the state of “cutting undocumented immigrants off from school, work and driving.” The Tribune added that the new rules are “wreaking havoc” on “people without documentation,” as well as “refugees and people with protected legal status,” like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

Anti-illegal immigration advocates see things differently. “Texas is not only on the right path here, but Texas has actually been a leader in cutting off incentives for people to come to the United States illegally and remain in the United States illegally,” says Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). “And this has been happening systematically over the last decade or so.”

Some Texas Republicans want to go even further, pushing to challenge the Supreme Court’s 1982 ruling that mandated states provide public education to all students regardless of their legal status. That challenge could come up in next year’s legislative session.

In the meantime, Mehlman believes Texas has set a model for how states should approach illegal immigration. “What this does is over time, it convinces people that if you’re in the country illegally, Texas may not be the best place to live,” he says. “Look, Texas can’t solve the problem for the nation—it’s a federal issue. But Texas can do what is in the best interest of Texans, and that is what the governor is doing.”

While President Donald Trump cracks down on illegal immigration at the national level, Texas is doing its part…

[6
7336,6920,6919,6918,6465,2115,91676,1724,1526,6921,223,287,82,154,1594,91677,27,29,28,272,172
0":"post-238523","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-texas","8":"tag-benefits","9":"tag-charity-mccurdy","10":"tag-charlie-parker","11":"tag-chris-duel","12":"tag-college-tuition","13":"tag-illegal-immigration","14":"tag-illegals","15":"tag-immigration","16":"tag-media","17":"tag-mr-t","18":"tag-news","19":"tag-politics","20":"tag-san-antonio","21":"tag-sports","22":"tag-spurs","23":"tag-state-licenses","24":"tag-texas","25":"tag-texas-headlines","26":"tag-texas-news","27":"tag-traffic","28":"tag-weather
["GET
