New details this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/food\/article\/houston-katz-restaurant-protests-whitmire-20267111.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">reveal when Katz&#8217;s<\/a> could be reviving its flagship restaurant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/culture\/article\/austin-new-city-logo-draws-mixed-reactions-21032401.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Austin.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/entertainment\/restaurants-bars\/article\/First-look-The-redesigned-Katz-s-deli-12877437.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">24-hour diner-style chain<\/a> has officially filed a permit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdlr.texas.gov\/TABS\/Search\/Project\/TABS2026016821\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation<\/a> for a $2.5 million renovation of the ground floor space of 601 Rio Grande St. and neighboring 620 W 6th St. to become a full-service restaurant with a full commercial kitchen. According to the submitted project details, construction will begin in September and take six months to be completed. Information in TDLR filings aren&#8217;t final, however, and are subject to change.<\/p>\n<p>Katz&#8217;s&#8217; move back to the capital is a plan years in the making, and it&#8217;s a full circle moment for Barry Katz, whose father ran the original restaurant that opened in Austin in 1979. Having worked there starting at 8 years old, Katz has said he knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a restaurateur. As an adult, he brought a taste of the family business to Houston with several Katz&#8217;s locations. In 2024, he got to plan Katz\u2019s return back to where it all started once he purchased the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2024\/08\/29\/katzs-deli-bar-austin-tx-restaurant-owners-purchase-original-eye-return\/74997591007\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">OG Austin location at auction in bankruptcy court.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To go back to our original location, with 45 years of history, it just feels too good to be true. It\u2019s the luckiest thing in the world that it came up for sale,&#8221; Katz told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2024\/09\/03\/katzs-restaurant-deli-is-reopening-in-austin-at-original-west-sixth-street-address\/75059968007\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Austin-American Statesman<\/a> in 2024. &#8220;I feel like I\u2019ve won the Oscars, I have so many people to thank.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Katz&#8217;s first Houston location opened in 2000 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/entertainment\/restaurants-bars\/article\/The-skinny-on-Katz-s-Deli-remodel-in-Montrose-12931677.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Westheimer Road in Montrose<\/a>. Then came a\u00a0Woodlands location in 2006, a spot in the Heights in 2020, and launches in the\u00a0Galleria area and Memorial City in 2022 and &#8217;25, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An official opening date for the new Austin location has yet to be announced, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/katzsneverkloses.com\/history\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">restaurant&#8217;s website<\/a> states it is expected to reopen in 2027 or later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A top Texas deli is one step closer to reopening the doors of its original location.
