But it should be!

Because somehow, one has made itself right at home here in El Paso, and over time, it’s become a bit of a local celebrity.

Meet El Paso’s Most Mysterious Little Celebrity

Out at Rio Bosque Wetlands Park, just outside Socorro, this lone beaver has been quietly living- and building- since it was first spotted on a trail camera in 2019.

And while hardly anyone has seen it in person, that hasn’t stopped the hype.

Visitors swap name ideas like Bernie and Justin Beaver, and go searching for signs of its work. Because even if you don’t see it, you’ll see some of its handy work: dams, dens, and chewed-up trees all over the area.

Why This Beaver Is Such a Big Deal

Beavers are extremely rare in El Paso.

Experts say this one likely traveled downriver from New Mexico before settling at Rio Bosque, something that doesn’t happen often. Past beavers have come and gone, but this one has stayed.

READ MORE: A Sure Sign of Spring in El Paso Involves Vultures

It’s now built multiple dams and is actively shaping the environment, which is why beavers are considered a “keystone species.” In a desert like ours, that role is a pretty big deal.

There is one catch: it’s nocturnal. Even park staff haven’t seen it during the day, only the evidence it leaves behind.

How El Pasoans Can Try to Celebrity Beaver

If you want to try your luck, head to Rio Bosque, but don’t expect a guaranteed sighting.

Follow the trail along the old river channel and look for clues like chewed branches, scrape marks, dams, and dens. When the water is low, you can see even more of its handiwork.

Binoculars help, patience is key, and sticking to the trail is a must to protect the habitat.
