KATY, Texas \u2013 As tensions escalate between the United States and Iran, some Iranian-Americans in Houston say they support efforts to remove Iran\u2019s current regime but are concerned about how that message is being delivered.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump drew attention after posting on social media that \u201ca whole civilization will die tonight\u201d if Iran does not meet his demands, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz and agreeing to what he described as total regime change.<\/p>\n
For Nooshin M., an Iranian-American in Houston, the message was alarming, but she believes it may not reflect the president\u2019s true intent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWords carry power, and I don\u2019t think President Trump means that,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s been a man of his word, but I don\u2019t think he means that when he says that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nooshin, whose last name we are not identifying due to safety concerns for her family in Iran, says she remains in limited contact with relatives because of a digital blackout in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes they get internet for just a few seconds, just enough to send a quick text that they\u2019re okay,\u201d she said. \u201cWeeks go by and you don\u2019t even know if they\u2019re okay or what condition they\u2019re in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite those fears, she says many Iranians, both in the U.S. and inside Iran, believe this moment represents a rare opportunity for change.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis regime has never been this close to collapsing,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir days are numbered by hours, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n
She says many do not support a ceasefire, arguing that past attempts at negotiation have failed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot negotiate with this regime. We tried that before, it never works,\u201d Nooshin said.<\/p>\n
Instead, she says people she\u2019s spoken with in Iran want the current leadership fully removed not partially reformed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want him to fully finish the regime. Do not leave any fragment of this regime behind,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir only fear is a ceasefire. Because if that happens, it could be even worse than before.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, she emphasized that any military action should avoid harming civilians or critical infrastructure, something she worries could be used as propaganda by the Iranian government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want him to be mindful of our infrastructure, of power plants, of civilians,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what the regime will use against him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Noohsin says the focus, in her view, should be on targeting the leadership of Iran\u2019s ruling system not the general population.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope they continue targeting the heads of the regime but not civilians,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
As uncertainty continues, she says many Iranians remain hopeful that change is within reach.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve never been this close,\u201d Nooshin said. \u201cIt won\u2019t be in vain if the regime is fully dismantled and gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
