{"id":241128,"date":"2026-04-08T23:45:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T23:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/241128\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T23:45:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T23:45:06","slug":"river-oaks-area-restaurant-responds-after-viral-dress-code-discrimination-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/241128\/","title":{"rendered":"River Oaks-area restaurant responds after viral dress-code discrimination claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 A River Oaks-area restaurant is pushing back after a viral video showed a group of women claiming they were denied entry because of the restaurant\u2019s dress code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the video, posted by Instagram user @Roszzemary, the women say their reservation at Cocody was not honored because their dresses were \u201ctoo short\u201d and one guest was \u201cshowing her shoulders.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey are not letting us in because of what we\u2019re wearing,\u201d one woman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The video shows the women\u2019s outfits, then pans to a group of women who appear to be leaving the restaurant in similar attire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KPRC 2 requested comment from Cocody. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a statement, the restaurant said it is \u201caware of the video circulating on social media regarding our dress code policy\u201d and said it is committed to treating every guest \u201cwith respect and professionalism.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The restaurant said its dress code is part of the dining experience and that it \u201cconsistently\u201d enforces the policy. Cocody also said the video \u201cdoes not reflect the full context of the interaction and is incomplete and misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of the women featured in the video said restaurants can set dress standards, but they should be applied consistently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe had a reservation at nine o\u2019clock, and for us to get there and for them to say you can\u2019t come in because of what you\u2019re wearing when, right in front of our eyes, we saw other people coming in and out of the restaurant wearing similar clothing that we were reprimanded over,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KPRC 2 also received messages from other customers who said they had negative experiences at the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One customer, Sheree K., said she and her husband were part of a party of six couples with a reservation who were initially told they could not be seated \u201cwithout any explanation,\u201d despite showing a reservation confirmation. She said the group was later seated at the bar for about 30 minutes before being taken to a table, and she described the service as disorganized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Sheree K. also said ketchup was spilled on her back and her husband\u2019s jacket during the meal and that staff did not assist or acknowledge the incident. She said the jacket was stained and ruined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Other social media users defended Cocody, including one commenter who described the restaurant as \u201cupscale\u201d and said customers should \u201cdress appropriately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cCocody is a respected and reputable restaurant (owned by a respectful African couple) in the River Oaks areas. Very upscale if I may add. They have wonderful service and very tasty options on their menu. Make your reservations, dress appropriately and enjoy the amazing food and ambiance,\u201d @smooveoperatorr said in a post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Cocody\u2019s dress code posted online says it requires \u201csmart wear, business casual, or professional attire.\u201d The policy states that athletic wear, sleepwear, slippers, \u201cexcessively revealing clothing,\u201d or exposed undergarments are not permitted.
