More women are having babies later in life. How to improve your chance of a healthy pregnancy<\/a><\/p>\nAdriana Luna and her fianc\u00e9, Anthony Lerma, were already parents to a two-year-old son when they learned Luna was pregnant. Despite the odds, Luna delivered the girls on Valentine\u2019s Day at 29 weeks.<\/p>\n
Now, two of the babies have been released from the neonatal intensive care unit, while the family hopes the other two will be home soon.<\/p>\n
For Luna, the experience has been both overwhelming and emotional.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was actually one and done with my toddler, but they just came and they’re a miracle because they weren’t supposed to be here at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Luna said she had an intrauterine device, or IUD, at the time, making the pregnancy even more unexpected.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was like \u2018no fricking way!\u2019\u201d Lerma said. \u201cHe thought I was joking,\u201d Luna added.<\/p>\n
Pregnancies involving multiple babies can be high-risk, something Luna said weighed heavily on her.<\/p>\n
\u201cMultiples does not run in my family, so this was something new. And at the same time, I was excited, but also worried,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
At the time, Luna had just begun a nursing program at Del Mar College. While she is now focused on caring for her five children, she said she plans to return.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is my career. That is my aspiration. I am going to be a nurse. Nothing’s going to stop me,\u201d Luna said.<\/p>\n
The couple said they have not gone through the journey alone. Dr. Miguel Deleon, who leads the NICU at Corpus Christi Medical Center, has played a key role in the babies\u2019 care.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne in 11 million are the odds of having in this particular scenario of identical twins, and so it’s very rewarding,\u201d Deleon said.<\/p>\n
He said his team has been prepared from the start.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn standby from the very beginning because we don’t know when they’re gonna be born, and I think it’s always a challenge to be predicting because the care is totally different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As they adjust to life as a family of seven, Luna and Lerma are asking the community for help.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do wanna provide our the best for our babies and also it is hard for us right now as well because I can’t work I can’t. I can’t do a lot as I wanted to,\u201d Luna said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnything helps really,\u201d Lerma added.<\/p>\n
