{"id":241802,"date":"2026-04-09T10:21:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/241802\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T10:21:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:21:21","slug":"weekend-events-will-be-on-high-alert-as-storm-threat-rises-in-austin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/241802\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend events will be on high alert as storm threat rises in Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"Clouds will take over Central Texas again on Thursday as moisture streams in from the Gulf.\u00a0\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:1 \/ 1\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Clouds will take over Central Texas again on Thursday as moisture streams in from the Gulf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>National Weather Service<\/p>\n<p>After a stretch of dry, comfortable weather, the Lone Star State is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/weather\/article\/austin-forecast-wednesday-warmer-week-rain-ahead-22193159.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">heading back into a more active pattern<\/a>, with a four-day threat of severe storms and pockets of heavy rainfall on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While Central Texas could certainly use the rain, the timing isn\u2019t ideal, as weekend storms may disrupt several major events, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthdayaustin.com\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Austin Earth Day Celebration<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/entertainment\/article\/austin-kite-fest-abc-2026-zilker-park-guide-22184044.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Zilker Kite Festival<\/a> on Saturday, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cap10k.com\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Statesman Cap10K race\u00a0<\/a>on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>While most events will continue rain or shine, the threat of thunderstorms could bring the festivities to a halt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race will start regardless of precipitation,\u201d Cap10K organizers said on their website. \u201cThe race will only be cancelled if weather conditions present imminent danger to participants and any announcement concerning a change to the race day schedule will be communicated by email, Facebook and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/statesmancap10k\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Instagram<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re still a couple of days away from the weekend, but the National Weather Service\u2019s Storm Prediction Center is already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/exper\/day4-8\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">highlighting parts of Texas<\/a> for a risk of severe weather, while the weather service\u2019s Weather Prediction Center is noting the potential for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/qpf\/excessive_rainfall_outlook_ero.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">localized flooding with any heavy rainfall<\/a> that occurs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Severe weather is possible in West Texas on Saturday and then across Central Texas on Sunday with the main threats being large hail and 60-mph wind gusts.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:4 \/ 3\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Severe weather is possible in West Texas on Saturday and then across Central Texas on Sunday with the main threats being large hail and 60-mph wind gusts.<\/p>\n<p>Storm Prediction Center<\/p>\n<p>What is the\u00a0Thursday forecast?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll wake up to an overcast sky with spotty showers, mainly east of Austin and near the Coastal Plains. Temperatures will be warmer than in the past few mornings, with starts in the upper 50s and lower 60s. By the afternoon, clouds will break away a bit, allowing for an increase in atmospheric instability, which will produce a few isolated thunderstorms across Central Texas. Later in the day, we could see a bump in weather activity in the afternoon as a series of atmospheric disturbances move into Texas from the desert Southwest and from northern Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A strong atmospheric disturbance will move over Texas beginning on Friday and traveling northeast through the weekend.\u00a0\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A strong atmospheric disturbance will move over Texas beginning on Friday and traveling northeast through the weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Weather Prediction Center<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost guidance indicates somewhat limited (wind) shear this day, which would support more disorganized, scattered storms,\u201d weather service meteorologists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/product.php?site=EWX&amp;issuedby=EWX&amp;product=AFD&amp;format=CI&amp;version=1&amp;glossary=1\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">wrote in their Wednesday forecast discussion<\/a> for Austin and San Antonio. \u201cThis changes as we move into the weekend, as a strong trough (of low pressure) moves over the western U.S. and instability, shear and lift increase over South-Central Texas, which would support severe thunderstorm potential which (the Storm Prediction Center) continues to highlight for some of our area Saturday and Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>What is the weekend forecast?<\/p>\n<p>A strong disturbance will move across Central Texas through the weekend, bringing periods of rain and a few thunderstorms. While it\u2019s still too early to pin down exact timing, Saturday morning is shaping up to be mostly dry with just a few sprinkles. By the afternoon, light showers and a few isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop, with temperatures rising from the mid-60s in the morning to near 80 degrees that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>We could see a brief break in the rain early Sunday, but as temperatures warm up, the scattered showers and thunderstorms could resume. At this point, we\u2019re not expecting a solid line or a large complex of storms.
