{"id":242326,"date":"2026-04-09T17:59:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T17:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/242326\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T17:59:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T17:59:06","slug":"attorney-general-ken-paxton-demands-audit-documents-from-lubbock-and-other-texas-cities-in-tax-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/242326\/","title":{"rendered":"Attorney General Ken Paxton demands audit documents from Lubbock and other Texas cities in tax probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; The State of Texas wants to find out if Lubbock and more than a thousand other municipal governments have illegally raised their property taxes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Attorney General Ken Paxton says he wants to make sure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2025\/12\/09\/lubbock-included-attorney-general-ken-paxton-investigation-nearly-1000-texas-cities-finances\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2025\/12\/09\/lubbock-included-attorney-general-ken-paxton-investigation-nearly-1000-texas-cities-finances\/\">these cities are following financial transparency laws<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Last year, the legislature ordered cities to complete and publicly post annual financial audits with a deadline. If they fail to do that, they cannot approve a tax rate above the no-new-revenue rate, which keeps revenue the same as the year before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">At this point, the AG\u2019s office is only requesting documents. He hasn\u2019t accused any of the cities of wrongdoings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The City of Lubbock has not yet commented. The city publishes comprehensive and popular financial audits each year on its <a href=\"https:\/\/ci.lubbock.tx.us\/departments\/finance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ci.lubbock.tx.us\/departments\/finance\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 KCBD.
