{"id":242702,"date":"2026-04-09T22:52:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T22:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/242702\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T22:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T22:52:10","slug":"cone-zones-may-not-disappear-even-after-completion-of-downtown-street-project-city-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/242702\/","title":{"rendered":"Cone zones may not disappear even after \u2018completion\u2019 of downtown street project, city says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 A yearslong street construction project downtown is nearing its final stages, but that may not mean the end of construction cones in that area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The roadwork, which has been going on since 2022, is known as the South Alamo project and is being managed by the City of San Antonio\u2019s Capital Delivery Department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It\u2019s a $58 million bond project that includes improvements, such as repaved streets and upgraded sidewalks along South Alamo Street between Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Market Street. <\/p>\n<p>A pile of bricks sits near the area of construction at S. Alamo and Cesar Chavez. Bricklaying is just one of the tasks still to be done ahead of Monday&#8217;s &#8220;substantial completion&#8221; date. (Copyright 2024 by KSAT &#8211; All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In March, Nicholas Olivier, a spokesman for the Public Works Department, said the project should reach \u201csubstantial completion\u201d by April 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a new email, though, he clarified that there still could be additional work to do even after that date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Gustavo Lorensy, who was making deliveries nearby Thursday morning, said he is praying for an end to the road closures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe came down here to deliver, and I had to park half a block down to deliver to this place,\u201d he said, pointing to a restaurant in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Lorensy said at one point, he worked at La Villita but gave up that job due to the difficulties he had in getting around with all the construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It also proved to be a difficult task for Mariah Burns as she tried to travel to Hemisfair Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI had to make a couple of loops and my husband was, like, \u2018No, I think you can still go that way,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cIt was super confusing just trying to get to this spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Burns, who is visiting from Louisiana, said she found out about the park while doing research online. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The traffic problems, though, came as an unwelcome surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou really have to know the area and, kind of, like, maneuver with the GPS system to figure it out,\u201d Burns said. \u201cIt was a little bit of a headache, I\u2019m not going to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">People like Lorensy are hoping for an end to this sort of headache soon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The April 13 date for \u201csubstantial completion\u201d is just days ahead of the start of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Fiesta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Fiesta\/\">Fiesta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Several of the events take place each year in La Villita and other areas near the construction zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Olivier said among the jobs that crews are still working to complete are brick paving, landscaping, lighting, signage, signal work and street striping. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He said additionally, there will be a period for completing \u201cpunch list items,\u201d or minor corrective work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That part of the project will begin once Fiesta is over, Olivier said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Read also:<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by KSAT &#8211;
