He showed up in a B-movie about terrorism<\/p>\n<p>Just one year into his music career, Strait made a cameo in the little-known 1982 action film \u201cThe Soldier.\u201d The movie follows a special unit dismantling a terrorist plot to detonate a plutonium bomb over a Saudi Arabian oil field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strait and his bandmates appear in a shoehorned honky-tonk scene where they perform his first No. 1 hit, \u201cFool-Hearted Memory.\u201d In the clip, a confrontation leads to a barroom brawl before someone gets dunked into a mud-wrestling pit. He lost his \u2018Baby Blue\u2019 in 1986<\/p>\n<p>Strait and his high school sweetheart, Norma Voss, welcomed their first child, Jenifer Lyn Strait, during his Army service in Hawaii in 1972. According to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgestraitfever.org\/thestraitstory.html#:~:text=It%20entered%20the%20charts%20on%20May%2016%2C,as%20a%20ranch%20foreman%20in%20San%20Marcos.\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Strait Story<\/a>,&#8221; he also sang in a band that entertained troops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>After his deployment ended in 1975, the family moved to San Marcos so Strait could attend Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State. He studied agriculture using the G.I. Bill, aiming for a ranching or rodeo career, and also joined the Ace in the Hole Band.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating in 1979, Strait worked as a ranch manager at Hart Ranch in Martindale. Jenifer, who was not wearing a seatbelt and had her window open, was the only fatality. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgestraitfever.org\/rememberingjenifer.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation<\/a>, Strait was home at the time and arrived on the scene shortly after being notified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Strait buried himself in work and was back on the road just three weeks later. The private musician stopped giving interviews for many years and still rarely speaks about the loss. It is unclear when the family left San Marcos, but they were settled in San Antonio by the mid-90s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just kind of shut down,\u201d Strait told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2017\/07\/24\/george-straits-long-ride\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New Yorker<\/a> in 2017. \u201cI just didn\u2019t feel like talking about it, so I quit doing interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans have long speculated that his 1988 song \u201cBaby Blue\u201d honors\u00a0Jenifer, but Strait\u00a0has never confirmed it and the song\u2019s original writer, Aaron Barker, has not commented. Strait said in 2005 that the song \u201cYou\u2019ll Be There\u201d from \u201cSomewhere Down in Texas\u201d reminds him of\u00a0Jenifer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat song hit home for me for obvious reasons,\u201d Strait said in a 2007 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111019042135\/http:\/\/159.54.226.237\/07_issues\/070121\/070121strait.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USA Weekend \u201cOur American Icon Series\u201d<\/a> cover story. \u201cI\u2019m a religious person. He first performed with Willie Nelson in 2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite being friends for years, Strait didn\u2019t perform onstage with Willie Nelson until 2019. The Texas icons joined forces for the \u201cWillie: Life &amp; Songs of an American Outlaw\u201d concert in Nashville. He holds the record for No. 1 country hits<\/p>\n<p>Over nearly five decades, Strait has amassed 60 No. 1 hits \u2014 more than any other country artist. That total includes 44 songs atop Billboard\u2019s Hot Country Songs chart and 16 on the Mediabase chart. Conway Twitty, a.k.a. \u201cThe High Priest of Country Music,\u201d ranks second with 55 hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Despite holding the record for most CMA Award nominations (more than 80), Strait is not a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Plot twist \u2014 he&#8217;s related to Jeff Bezos<\/p>\n<p>Strait is related to Amazon founder Jeff\u00a0Bezos through Bezos\u2019 mother, Jacklyn Gise. Strait and Gise are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/2018\/04\/05\/heres-your-friendly-reminder-that-jeff-bezos-is-george-straits-cousin\/986905007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second cousins once removed,<\/a> making Strait&#8217;s son, \u201cBubba,\u201d Bezos&#8217;\u00a0third cousin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The connection traces back to Strait\u2019s great-grandfather, John Joseph Strait. The lineage split between two sons: John Samuel \u2014 Strait\u2019s grandfather \u2014 and\u00a0Yancy Clarence. John Samuel was the father of John Byron, Strait\u2019s dad.<\/p>\n<p>Yancy Clarence had a daughter, Mattie Strait, who married Lawrence Preston\u00a0Gise. They had Jacklyn Gise, who later gave birth to Bezos with Jeffrey Preston Jorgenson.
