Often nicknamed the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/opinion\/letters\/article\/houston-astrodome-rodeo-texas-history-eight-wonder-21268394.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\"> &#8216;Eighth Wonder of the World,&#8217; <\/a>the Astrodome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/investigations\/article\/poll-voters-support-using-public-money-renovate-20793931.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">is now one step closer to earning the distinction.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The National Park Service recently shared t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/houston\/article\/astrodome-demolition-renovation-houston-21279717.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">hat the Astrodome <\/a>meets the criteria for consideration as a National Historic Landmark.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the highest honor that a historic site can receive,\u201d explains Beth Wiedower Jackson, executive director of the Astrodome Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>To qualify, a property must meet one of six criteria:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be the location of an event that had a significant impact on American history overall.<br \/>\nBe the property most strongly associated with a nationally significant figure in American history.<br \/>\nProvide an outstanding illustration of a broad theme or trend in American history overall.<br \/>\nBe an outstanding example of an architectural style or significant development in engineering.<br \/>\nBe part of a group of resources that together form a historic district.<br \/>\nBe a property that can provide nationally significant archeological information.<\/p>\n<p>There are approximately 2,700 National Historic Landmarks. It has value to the nation. So if there\u2019s a way to save it, we should. This is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Astrodome Conservancy unveiled an ambitious $1 billion plan, Vision: Astrodome, two years ago, with a mission to answer the decades-long question of what to do with the landmark. Gensler, a Houston design firm, created the redevelopment concept.<\/p>\n<p>HOUSTONCHRONICLE.COM:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/lifestyle\/article\/astrodome-renderings-plan-19909244.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renderings of the Astrodome Conservancy\u2019s $1 billion plan to repurpose landmark stadium<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conservancy\u2019s chairman, Phoebe Tudor, who established the nonprofit organization in 2016 by issuing a $100,000 investment grant, says the building is structurally sound, has undergone remediation for asbestos and is debt-free. \u201cIt\u2019s over-engineered, solid and strong,\u201d she told the Chronicle in 2024. \u201cIt\u2019s in really good shape and just needs some TLC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Astrodome Conservancy founder Phoebe Tudor, left, speaks with Houston City Councilman David Robinson as members of organization gather for its first event, Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, in Houston. The Office of County Administration released cost estimates the previous month for demolishing and renovating the building. Demolition would cost nearly $55 million, according to\u00a0OCA, while renovating the Astrodome would require a staggering $752 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>HOUSTONCHRONICLE.COM:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/houston\/article\/astrodome-demolition-renovation-houston-21279717.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What will happen to Houston\u2019s Astrodome? Its fate could soon be decided.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interim County Administrator Jesse Dickerman said in a December 2025 release that renovating the Astrodome would not be feasible without outside investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While meeting the criteria for becoming a National Historistic Landmark is the first step in a multi-year process, Jackson notes the milestone\u2019s significance. Preservation Houston prepared the evaluation in partnership with the Astrodome Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the building has already been designated a State Antiquities Landmark, which has teeth, a National Historic Landmark will not add any protections,\u201d Jackson says. \u201cWhat this honorific designation does in the mindset of the public is affirm the rarity and the value of the Astrodome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next move is to prepare the formal nomination. The Conservancy is raising funds to hire a professional consultant to prepare a compelling case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior would need to issue the final approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re still several years away, but maybe by 2028 or 2029,\u201d Jackson says. \u201cThe big question is, will this designation cause whoever is sitting in the commissioner\u2019s seat in 2028 or 2029 to think differently?
