The Undergraduate Research Center, a central hub organizing research opportunities, paid for Dixon\u2019s travel to conduct interviews for her research fellowship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The students watched as UT administrators unilaterally cut both programs under pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/01\/01\/texas-senate-bill-17-sb-17-ut-austin-anti-dei-law-timeline-universities-colleges\/75252167007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new laws<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/higher-ed-changes-texas-universities-21266338.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leadership changes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-austin-cuts-teaching-learning-research-21305629.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushes for efficiency<\/a>. As UT leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-consolidates-ethnic-gender-studies-21349460.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restructure the College of Liberal Arts <\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/04\/07\/university-of-texas-ends-flag-courses-requirements-including-diversity-ethics\/82972825007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> review the core curriculum<\/a> that all students take, change at the state\u2019s flagship has \u201conly sped up,\u201d Dixon, the slate\u2019s president, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just like people are hearing this and not caring. It\u2019s that the more (changes) happen, the more students are becoming disillusioned and out of touch,\u201d Watt, who serves as the vice president, said. \u201cIt\u2019s like, you just wake up and check your email again and it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, there\u2019s another massive change to my campus.\u2019 We want to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campaigning on a platform of \u201cclosing the gap\u201d between the administration and students, Dixon and Watt, who took office this week, say they will push for transparency as their university\u00a0continues to face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-history-political-influence-texas-abbott-21113899.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scrutiny from vocal politicians<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dixon and Watt\u2019s goals around advocacy and transparency contrast with their predecessors, who have predominantly operated behind-the-scenes and, more recently, avoided controversial topics. But as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjzzIq76tyTAxUXk2oFHQGYADIQFnoECBgQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.statesman.com%2Fnews%2Feducation%2Farticle%2Funiversity-texas-faculty-senate-abolish-21019686.php&amp;usg=AOvVaw0W2cDdzQtohSrILBe8vnv0&amp;opi=89978449\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new laws <\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-system-policy-controversial-thttps:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-system-policy-controversial-topics-21350613.phpopics-21350613.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0policies<\/a> limit the ways students and faculty can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/university-texas-lawsuit-free-speech-policy-2972-21028571.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hold officials accountable<\/a>, the UT student leaders\u2019 message has resonated across campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are feeling like there\u2019s no one fighting for them, there\u2019s no one advocating for them. They\u2019re feeling like these changes are just being imposed on top of them,\u201d Dixon said. \u201cCreating a legacy of student government as being something that can fight for students and that can make change for them is a really big goal of ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/university-texas-system-faculty-senate-abolish-20822502.phphttps:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/university-texas-system-faculty-senate-abolish-20822502.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 37 passed <\/a>in 2025, public higher education institutions shifted decision making power to regents and away from faculty. In response, the UT System shuttered its institutions\u2019 faculty council. The flagship no longer has an elected faculty body providing input in high-level university decisions. In the past year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/jim-davis-ut-austin-system-president-john-zerwas-20822511.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UT\u2019s president, chancellor <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/06\/03\/ut-interim-president-stuns-faculty-with-sole-provost-finalist-announcement\/84016852007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provost <\/a>were hand picked for their roles by regents, who are appointed by the governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, student government leaders are some of the only elected UT representatives. The students are determined to expand public forums for students to share feedback directly with President Jim Davis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-austin-jim-davis-declines-media-transparency-21872441.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who has declined requests for public interviews during his first year in office<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dixon and Watt\u2019s win may challenge UT leaders to more closely engage with student advocates after a year<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-austin-jim-davis-declines-media-transparency-21872441.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> spent avoiding public forums<\/a>. The law required universities to end diversity, equity and inclusion supports for students, prompting UT to close the Multicultural Engagement Center, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/state\/2024\/01\/29\/dei-ban-texas-sb17-law-meaning-guide-what-ut-public-universities-lost\/72283717007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gender and Sexuality Center at UT and the Division of Diversity and Cultural Engagement<\/a>. Four months after it initially complied and a week after more direct pressure from the law\u2019s author, the university fired about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2024\/04\/22\/university-of-texas-dei-job-losses-layoffs-records-reveal-59-jobs-lost-april-2\/73382471007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a060 staff who had worked in student support and DEI initiatives.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around that time, Watt approached Dixon with an idea for a platform that focused on creating better ways for all students to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first approached her, it was in the wake of some of those decisions that were happening, and we were saying, \u2018Hey, I think we can get in rooms and advocate for students in a very real and tangible way,\u2019\u201d Watt said. \u201cWe want to see change in all communities on this campus, advocate for all voices on this campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Texan editorial board, the opinion section of UT\u2019s student newspaper, endorsed the duo as the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailytexan.com\/2026\/02\/27\/kiera-dixon-and-jaden-watt-best-choice-for-change\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbest choice for change,\u201d<\/a> and the best platform to advocate for student interests. They beat out seven other pairs with<a href=\"https:\/\/deanofstudents.utexas.edu\/studentelections\/campuswideelection\/downloads\/2026CampusWideElectionResultsWithTabulations.pdf\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> nearly 3,000 votes<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a small share of the campus\u2019s 43,000 undergraduate student body. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailytexan.com\/2026\/03\/09\/kiera-dixon-jaden-watt-win-student-government-presidential-vice-presidential-election\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next highest vote getters<\/a>\u00a0won 2,001 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>UT has three student-run branches of government that operate similarly to the United States\u2019 branches of power: a Supreme Court that ensures leaders comply with student government bylaws; a legislative assembly with representatives from each college that pass policy; and an executive branch now led by Dixon and Watt. The student groups are funded by UT and advised by the dean of students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Watt and Dixon are aware that student government elections draw remarkably low turnout, and that many at UT don\u2019t know what the body does or doubt it has real impact. But they believe in their new roles\u2019 potential to elevate student voices to the administration, becoming a bridge between both parties during and after their year of leadership.\u00a0They plan to treat it like a full-time job, devoting each week to meeting with students and university leaders to serve campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been very passionate about (student government) as a way to advocate for student voices,\u201d Dixon said. \u201cBut I also believe that to accomplish that goal, it needs to genuinely advocate for them, instead of just saying it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s leaders, Hudson Thomas and Thierry Chu also wanted student government to be more visible. They launched digital student IDs, accompanied university leaders at press conferences, hosted a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-student-entrepreneurs-builders-bullpen-startups-22093758.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">student startup competition<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/article\/ut-vigil-savitha-shan-bufords-shooting-21955916.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">organized a vigil <\/a>after a gunman shot and killed a student at\u00a0Buford\u2019s Bar in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>But when President Donald Trump\u2019s administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-trump-deal-university-texas-higher-ed-21205412.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extended UT and eight other universities <\/a>a deal that would reward the adoption of conservative priorities with extra federal funding opportunities, the leaders remained quiet even as their peers at seven of the other institutions spoke out against the offer.<\/p>\n<p>UT\u2019s Graduate Student Assembly, another elected body to represent graduate students,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/quick-takes\/2025\/10\/21\/ut-austin-muzzles-grad-student-assemblys-political-speech\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has reported pressure to limit speech <\/a>due to the school\u2019s institutional neutrality policy, which prevents university leaders or groups funded by the UT from commenting on subjects unrelated to the university. UT Spokesperson Mike Rosen did not respond to requests for comment on how UT will work with the new student leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Voice for change<\/p>\n<p>The duo feels their goal is important to the campus community. Talking to nearly 1,000 of their peers during their two-week campaign this spring, Dixon and Watt found students felt disenfranchised and ignored in university decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Students have watched their university change, most recently with the consolidation of ethnic studies departments, a new policy limiting the teaching of controversial topics and declining transparency. But students don\u2019t feel they have a sufficient way to respond, Dixon and Watt said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under their platform, the two leaders will host more public forums for students to share how they are affected by high-level decisions and fight policies that reduce academic opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That push could fill a void. In the wake of the UT System cutting faculty senates, a long standing venue that gave faculty input on university decisions, the student government is one of the only remaining forums for bottom-up input with a direct line to administrators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Jim Davis, UT\u2019s first president without ties to academia in more than 100 years, replaced the faculty council with an appointed faculty advisory board, which does not meet publicity. UT officials say a student advisory board regularly meets with the president, but Dixon and Watt said it is inactive. They want to bring it back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Students \u201cneed to be able to trust that there\u2019s somebody in there advocating for my best interest,\u201d Watt said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pair want to share non-academic challenges, too.
