She&#8217;s part of an ongoing research project led by partners at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bri.sulross.edu\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Borderlands Research Institute<\/a>, which is tracking the return of black bears to Texas. Researchers fit her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/bear-neighborhood-watch-west-texas-20270893.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">with a collar<\/a> in November 2024, allowing them to follow her movements across the rugged landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her GPS location told us she was denning on the preserve, and den checks are a regular part of tracking her health, breeding and habitat use,&#8221; The Nature Conservancy&#8217;s West Texas Preserve Manager Ryan\u00a0Thornton\u00a0told Chron. &#8220;When we went to check on her in her den, we discovered she had given birth to two cubs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cubs\u2014Pancakes\u00a0Jr. and his brother\u2014were briefly handled during that check before being returned to their den.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After taking a few biometrics from the cubs, we complete the den check and put him and his brother back with their mother, Pancakes, where they are continuing to den today,&#8221; Thornton said.<\/p>\n<p>Both cubs have been PIT-tagged and are expected to be tracked as part of the ongoing research, offering scientists a rare look at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/texas-black-bear-warning-20775905.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">young bears<\/a> survive and move through the region.<\/p>\n<p>The names carry a bit of personality. Pancakes got her name from the preserve manager&#8217;s children, and &#8220;Syrup&#8221; is already a top contender for a future cub. The conservancy is still gathering additional name suggestions, though.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the lighthearted names is serious science. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/texas-black-bear-encounters-20002869.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Borderlands Research Institute<\/a> is studying how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/article\/black-bear-texas-safety-tips-21035582.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">black bears<\/a> navigate habitat that spans the U.S.-Mexico border, including how infrastructure may affect their movement. Researchers are also examining whether the population can sustain itself long-term in West Texas.<\/p>\n<p>That resilience marks a sharp turnaround. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/bear-texas-gas-station-savoy-20368101.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Black bears<\/a> once roamed widely across Texas but were largely wiped out by the early 1900s due to hunting and habitat loss. Decades later, a small population in the northern Mexico mountains began slowly crossing back over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/border-wall-big-bend-national-park-21362974.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Rio Grande<\/a>. By the 1990s, bears started to reestablish a foothold.<\/p>\n<p>Now, sightings are becoming more common\u2014from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/big-bend-lodge-project-cancelled-22185319.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Big Bend<\/a> region to parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/texas-bears-hill-country-18435194.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the Hill Country<\/a>\u2014as bears reclaim pieces of their historic range.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/bear-sighting-big-bend-texas-19660419.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Black bears<\/a> seem to be quickly reinhabiting their native range in West Texas, and Pancakes giving birth to two cubs displays the resilience and adaptability of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/life\/wildlife\/article\/texas-black-bear-19622843.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the species<\/a>,&#8221; Thornton said.<\/p>\n<p>The Nature Conservancy in Texas is working to support that return by acquiring land and building wildlife corridors to connect habitats across the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as we know, these two new cubs make up a total of six young that Pancakes has raised on The Nature Conservancy&#8217;s Independence Creek Preserve.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pancakes\u00a0Jr.&#8217;s mother, Pancakes, isn&#8217;t just any bear.
