Here&#8217;s how.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a Sunday update from the San Antonio Independent School District, archeologists uncovered &#8220;foundational remnants of two residences.&#8221; One of those residences was the Newton House, &#8220;once home to a San Antonio mayor in the 1800s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saisd.net\/o\/bond\/article\/2800343\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was once home<\/a>\u00a0to Col. Samuel Galitzin Newton, &#8220;a lawyer who served as an officer in the Civil War before being mayor.&#8221; Archeologists also discovered &#8220;a portion of the San Pedro acequia system,&#8221; which is a gravity-fed ditch irrigation system historically used to bring water to fields and livestock.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0acequia system consisted of irrigation canals that brought water from spring to farms, homes and mills all the way back in the 1700s,\u201d Yvonne Little, head of SAISD&#8217;s Capital Development and Construction Services, said in the Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DWwfPk7jBRs\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">update<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThis was an extraordinary discovery for us to uncover this part of San Antonio history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We arranged for the historical investigation of the Fox Tech site as part of our project plan because of where the site was located,&#8221; SAISD told the Express-News. &#8220;Before beginning our bond work, we collaborated with both the City of San Antonio and our archaeological partners at Pape-Dawson.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In November 2020, the San Antonio\u00a0ISD voters &#8220;passed two propositions totaling $1.3 billion,&#8221; the district&#8217;s &#8220;Bond 2020&#8221; page states. &#8220;The bond funding is being used for major school renovations and security, technology, and HVAC upgrades.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a district statement to the Express-News, the discoveries will eventually lead to two new historic sites registered with the Texas Historic Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A comprehensive archeological report has been generated to include the history of the buildings, their occupants, and the materials the structures were constructed from,&#8221; district officials said, noting that they have taken protective measures to preserve the structures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To honor these discoveries, we will be placing a plaque in its honor once the project is complete,&#8221; the district&#8217;s Sunday update reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It seems like San Antonio still has a few secrets hidden beneath its surface, as construction near a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":244378,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[82,84,83],"class_list":{"0":"post-244377","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-antonio","8":"tag-san-antonio","9":"tag-san-antonio-headlines","10":"tag-san-antonio-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244377","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=244377"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244377\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/244378"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=244377"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=244377"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=244377"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
