{"id":244634,"date":"2026-04-11T04:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T04:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/244634\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T04:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T04:11:10","slug":"university-of-houston-aerospace-students-watch-orions-historic-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/244634\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Houston aerospace students watch Orion\u2019s historic return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 University of Houston aerospace engineering and space architecture students gathered to watch the final moments of NASA\u2019s Orion mission, and for a few breathless minutes, the room fell completely silent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Orion re-entered Earth\u2019s atmosphere at more than 24,000 mph before splashing down in what Mission Control called a \u201ctextbook\u201d return. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For the students watching at UH, the tension was palpable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think everyone was stressed, this is one of the most dangerous parts of these sorts of missions,\u201d said Jennifer Zuspan, a UH student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Professors turned the entire mission into a classroom lesson, culminating with Friday\u2019s splashdown. The students, many of whom are pursuing careers in the aerospace industry, were fully aware of what was at stake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When the spacecraft landed safely, the reaction was immediate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhen I saw them, I was really relieved,\u201d said Quill Starling, another UH student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Faculty were equally moved. Dr. Karolos Grigoriadis, chair of UH\u2019s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, called the landing virtually flawless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s the most dangerous part, and it was basically a picture-perfect splashdown,\u201d Grigoriadis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For him, the mission represents far more than a single achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s the beginning of a new era of permanent human presence on the moon and then following further beyond Mars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For the students in the room, the moment felt both historic and deeply personal&#8230; a glimpse into the careers they hope to build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI am very excited for the future, both as someone who wants to work in the aerospace industry and just as someone who finds it exciting, we have new places to explore,\u201d student Emma Pitroff said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think astronauts are really inspiring.
