A man is dead after a traffic stop led to a fight in north Houston early Saturday morning, police say.<\/p>\n
HOUSTON \u2014 An investigation is underway after police say a sergeant shot and killed a man in his 20s or 30s during a traffic stop in north Houston early Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
This happened around 1:30 a.m. on Airline Drive near Tidwell Road.<\/p>\n
The Houston Police Department said the incident started as a traffic stop. The sergeant reportedly pulled the man over into a parking lot and attempted to detain the suspect.<\/p>\n
As the sergeant tried to detain the man, police said the man started to fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Both the suspect and the sergeant fell to the ground, suspect continued to fight the sergeant. Sergeant’s weapon was discharged, suspect ran from the scene,” said HPD Assistant Chief Cantu.<\/p>\n
Officers reportedly found the man nearby with several gunshot wounds and began administering first aid. The man was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
HPD said the sergeant sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover.<\/p>\n
The shooting is under investigation by HPD’s Special Investigative Unit, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.<\/p>\n
