EL PASO, Texas (KTSM<\/a>) \u2014 There is still time to weigh in on whether the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education should change the name of Cesar Chavez Elementary School.<\/p>\n

This comes after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced against the Hispanic civil rights and labor rights icon. Chavez has been dead since 1993.<\/p>\n

Las Cruces board seeks input on possible Cesar Chavez Elementary renaming <\/a><\/p>\n

On Wednesday\u00a0evening, April 8, the\u00a0board hosted a special session at Cesar Chavez Elementary. Community members, including LCPS\u00a0staff and Las Cruces residents,\u00a0spoke both in favor of the name\u2019s\u00a0removal and preserving the school\u2019s name as-is. No action was taken at the meeting; the special\u00a0session\u00a0agenda was specific to hearing public feedback.<\/p>\n

Community members who wish to provide input may\u00a0still do so by\u00a0submitting\u00a0comments via email to input@lcps.net<\/a>. All feedback received through email will be compiled and shared with the Board of Education for consideration.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s meeting was also livestreamed. The video can be viewed by clicking on this link<\/a>. The next scheduled meeting of the board is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex, 505 S. Main St.<\/p>\n
