The majority of people will take the easy route and pick their fight in the Whataburger vs. In-N-Out vs. Shake Shack debate, but if you’re craving arguably the best burger in the Lone Star State, you’ll find it off the beaten path.

I’ve driven up and down Old San Antonio Road near Bryan-College Station countless times visiting my family’s farm in the Brazos River Valley, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that we made the fortuitous decision to pull into the appropriately named Top of the Hill Greasy Burgers. First opened on July 6, 2002, by Retha Valero, the restaurant may call a small wooden shack its home, but that doesn’t take away from the quality food inside.

Inside it doesn’t look like you’ll find a seat in the cramped interior, but a chair always tends to open up by the time you’ve ordered. The cafeteria-style seating is surrounded by walls of Texas flags, Texas A&M University signs, old-school Pepsi-Cola, RC Cola, and Busch Light ads, and a former soda fountain celebrates Top of the Hill’s appearance on The Texas Bucket List. The publication praised the restaurant’s Superman Burger — double meat bacon cheeseburger with grilled jalapenos — as helping you “feel what it’s like to soar through the sky like the man of steel himself.”

The Superman is one of 22 burgers the restaurant offers, ranging from the $3.98 Lil Burger all the way to the $28.95 Super Hulk. All burgers are made with hand-pressed, never-frozen patties along with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and American cheese. Folks can make it a combo with fries that can then be upgraded to add bacon cheddar, bacon cheddar ranch or chili cheese. Not wanting a burger? Top of the Hill offers three different salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, BLT, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets and more.

How do you order? Walk toward the back of the house until you see the wall of signatures from past visitors. A small ordering window sits underneath signs reading “If you want breakfast in bed…sleep in the kitchen!”; “If something here offends you, please let us know we can all use a good laugh”; and “We offer 3 kinds of services. Good. Cheap. Fast.” Once your food is ready they’ll call out your number from the pick-up window in the dining room, so don’t lose your ticket.

Craving a drink? You can try one of 10 different sodas from Boots Beverages or various teas.

Want a dessert to go with your meal? Top of the Hill offers family recipe banana pudding, cheesecake brownies and peach cobblers, the perfect bites to cut through the grease of the burgers. But how do the burgers taste?

My go-to order, a double cheeseburger without tomatoes, comes with a well-buttered bun, juicy meat and the right amount of toppings to add a pleasurable crunch with each bite. All burgers come in a brown wrapper that contains the titular grease, but they also don’t collapse in your hands before you can finish eating. Just make sure to grab plenty of napkins to wipe your hands from all that grease, and you’ll probably eat something lighter for your next meal.

Find it: 2444 Lakewood Drive, Bryan, TX 77807

Barbecue may be Texans’ go-to choice for consuming beef (expensive beef at that), but just as many people love…

[6
1112,820,30030,27,29,28
0":"post-245298","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-texas","8":"tag-mysafood","9":"tag-mysastaff","10":"tag-mysatx","11":"tag-texas","12":"tag-texas-headlines","13":"tag-texas-news
["GET
