The Castle Hills chief of police has resigned and an interim chief has been appointed amid an investigation into a deadly officer-involved shooting<\/a> in the North Side municipality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Former Chief Gary McHone submitted his resignation effective Thursday. Capt. Jose Davila has stepped in as interim chief, city leaders said Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe city thanks Chief McHone for his efforts with the Castle Hills Police Department and the community,\u201d City Manager Chris Duque said in a statement. \u201cWe wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials did not say why McHone resigned, but said they will provide McHone\u2019s letter of resignation.<\/p>\n

Davila has been with the Castle Hills Police Department since 2012 and has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, according to the city.<\/p>\n

City officials said the City Council, city administration and other departments will assist\u00a0Davila during the transition and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the department.<\/p>\n

McHone began serving as Castle Hills police chief on Oct. 1, succeeding retired Chief Esteban Zuniga.\u00a0McHone came to Castle Hills from Salado Independent School District, where he served as police chief, and had 30 years of public service, including 20 years of supervisory law enforcement experience.<\/p>\n

McHone previously worked for the village of Salado, the city of Muleshoe, the town of Prosper, Southern Methodist University and the city of Austin, according to Castle Hills. His training included a master\u2019s degree in criminal justice, a Master Peace Officer license, certified public manager training through Texas State University and FBI Command College training.<\/p>\n

The resignation comes two weeks after a deadly officer-involved shooting on the Loop 410 access road in Castle Hills.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On March 26, an officer was investigating a report of a hit-and run collision when he encountered Jazz Joseph Fernandez, 24, who emerged from a red pickup truck with at least one sharp object in his hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fernandez kept moving at the officer, who drew his gun and shot Fernandez several times, according to footage from a dash cam captured by a witness. Fernandez\u00a0was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n
