At Memorial Park Golf Course, players are hitting the greens in full force.

But across the city, the game is evolving, moving beyond traditional fairways and into a high-tech, indoor experience.

If it looks like golf, sounds like golf and plays like golf, but all within a few hundred square feet. It may be more than just a round. It could be a glimpse into the sport’s future.

“We’re seeing the data in real time,” said Matt Brewer, a Houston native and owner of two local simulator golf businesses. “We have cameras that actually show the impact of every single shot that you hit.”

Brewer, an avid golfer himself, said opening a simulator business was both a passion project and a response to growing demand.

“I’m also a huge golfer, right? So this was always something I would want to do for myself,” he said.

His “Back Nine” locations, including one in Houston’s Heights neighborhood, offer a different kind of golf experience. Instead of sprawling outdoor courses, players step into compact indoor bays where they can play on demand — no tee time, daylight or perfect weather required.

“We have a wonderful municipal course. Memorial Park is awesome,” Brewer said. “There’s just a lot of demand for it… and Houston weather is terrible. We all know that.”

That demand has surged in recent years. According to the National Golf Foundation, more than 48 million people participated in golf in 2025. Of those, more than 19 million took part exclusively in off-course activities like simulators.

“We’ve just seen a huge surge in services like this,” Brewer said.

Virtual golf has grown so popular that even professionals have embraced it, with simulator-based leagues gaining traction alongside traditional tournaments.

For everyday players, the appeal is both practical and personal. Golfers can play iconic courses from around the world, including Pebble Beach, without ever leaving Houston. The technology also allows for customized experiences and instant feedback on every swing.

For some, it’s also a more welcoming environment.

“There’s not a lot of females out there, and it is very male-dominated,” one local golfer said. “When you get your practice swings in here and hit a few good shots, it gives you the confidence to go out.”

And while the setting may be virtual, the competition is very real.

Inside the simulator, players can challenge each other in games, settle bets and test their skills, all without the risk of losing a ball.

As Houston’s golf scene continues to grow, simulator technology is helping shape the future of the game, blending tradition with innovation and bringing the course to players wherever they are.

Got a news tip or story idea?
