Marcus, a beloved figure in the Borderland arts community, spent decades capturing the culture and color of the El Paso-Ju\u00e1rez region while building the Hal Marcus Gallery into a cornerstone for local artists and art lovers.<\/p>\n
His death comes months after he spoke openly about a cancer diagnosis that he said had given him a renewed sense of purpose. At the time, Marcus said he was \u201cpreparing for going on a long journey,\u201d while continuing to create art nearly every day.<\/p>\n

RECOMMENDED: Beloved Borderland artist grapples with cancer diagnosis<\/a><\/p>\n The month of April marked the Hal Marcus Gallery\u2019s 30th anniversary, a milestone that he took much pride in.<\/p>\n \u201cThirty years ago, I wanted to create a space that felt like home for the community\u2019s imagination,\u201d Hal Marcus said. “Seeing the gallery become a place where people connect with our culture through color has been the greatest masterpiece of my life.<\/p>\n In an interview with KFOX14\/CBS4 just four days before his passing, Marcus reflected on that legacy, surrounded by the art and community he helped build.<\/p>\n “I wanted to let people know what I am going through. I’ve done a good job, so I feel my work coming to an end.” Marcus said.<\/p>\n Friends, family, and supporters say his impact extended far beyond his work, shaping the Borderland\u2019s artistic identity and inspiring generations of artists to follow their passion. <\/p>\n Marcus often encouraged others to \u201cdo what you love,\u201d a message he continued to share even in the final chapter of his life.<\/p>\n In that final interview, he ended with a simple goodbye.<\/p>\n Adios, amigos.<\/p>\n In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made towards the establishment of the Hal Marcus Art Museum at 1319 North Oregon, scheduled to open late 2027.
