Chansen Cole pitched into the ninth inning during a stellar start, as No. 17 West Virginia beat Texas Tech, 10-2, on Sunday to win the weekend series.<\/p>\n
Cole had allowed just one run through eight innings when he came out in the bottom of the ninth, already over 100 pitches on the day. He failed to record an out in the final frame, but still picked up the win, his fifth of the season.\u00a0 He allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out four. He induced 13 groundouts and stranded eight runners on base.<\/p>\n

All three of WVU\u2019s (24-8, 10-5 Big 12) starting pitchers threw at least seven innings this weekend against the Red Raiders (20-15, 6-9). Dawson Montesa pitched seven innings on Friday<\/a>, and Maxx Yehl threw 7 1\/3 on Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n West Virginia led 3-1 after seven innings and exploded for seven runs in the final two innings against a weak TTU bullpen.<\/p>\n Right fielder Brock Wills broke out of a slump with two hits and three RBI. Wills had just three hits in his last seven games entering Sunday, but finished 2-for-5 with three runs driven in to help the Mountaineers to victory.<\/p>\n Designated hitter Sean Smith went 4-for-5 with two RBI, and catcher Matthew Graveline had two hits and two RBI. As a team, the Mountaineers put up 10 runs on 18 hits with four doubles and a triple.<\/p>\n Center fielder Paul Schoenfeld and Smith drove in a run each in the top of the first inning, and Wills added his first in the top of the second. WVU\u2019s lead stayed at 3-0 until Texas Tech scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.<\/p>\n Freshman Adam Hayes did an admirable job on the mound for the Red Raiders, allowing three runs in four innings, making his first weekend start. Connor Mohan, TTU\u2019s typical Sunday starter, followed with three clean innings out of the bullpen.\u00a0<\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t until the top of the eighth that Mohan ran into trouble. With runners on second and third with no outs, freshman Zahir Barjam hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly, and Wills singled through the infield three batters later to bring home two more runs.\u00a0<\/p>\n Smith, first baseman Armani Guzman and Graveline all drove in runs during a four-run top of the ninth.\u00a0<\/p>\n The first two batters reached in the bottom of the ninth before Cole was lifted with 112 pitches.
