Corpus Christi among nearly 1,000 cities being investigated by Texas AG over audit compliance, tax rates<\/a><\/p>\nNueces County Tax Assessor\/Collector Kevin Keischnick said his office has received multiple reports of increased appraisals this year and urges property owners to act quickly if they believe something is off.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re concerned about your value, you need to contact the appraisal district \u2014 and you need to do it very quickly \u2014 because the deadline to file your protest is May 15,\u201d Keischnick said.<\/p>\n
Homeowners who don\u2019t have time to navigate the process themselves can hire property tax relief companies, though experts say those services often come at a price \u2014 typically around 30% of any savings.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a lot of really legitimate businesses that can do this for you,\u201d said Katie Galan with the Better Business Bureau. \u201cWhat you\u2019re paying for is their expertise and their time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, Galan warned consumers to be cautious of companies making unrealistic promises.<\/p>\n
\u201cRed flags include businesses that try to guarantee savings before they\u2019ve even reviewed your specific situation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Keischnick noted that current estimates may not reflect final tax bills.<\/p>\n
\u201cTax rates have not been adopted,\u201d he said. \u201cSome people have seen estimates, but those are based on last year\u2019s tax rate and newly proposed values.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another way to reduce a tax bill is by ensuring all eligible exemptions are filed.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019ve moved and need a new homestead exemption, or if you\u2019ve turned 65, or have a qualifying veteran\u2019s disability, make sure that information is submitted to the appraisal district,\u201d Keischnick said.<\/p>\n
Galan added that the Better Business Bureau has not received reports of property tax relief scams in the Coastal Bend.<\/p>\n
